RANKS

Each branch of the service has slightly different nomenclature for its various ranks. Here is the system used in the U.S. Coast Guard, listed in order of increasing rank.

Enlisted Ranks

1. Seaman Recruit,  after bootcamp becomes...
2. Seaman Apprentice, after time in grade and testing becomes...
3. Seaman

Non-Commissioned Officers (NCO's)

4. Petty Officer, 3rd Class
5. Petty Officer, 2nd Class
6. Petty Officer, 1st Class (may proceed to Commisioned Officer from here
                              or continue in NCO ranks)
7. Chief Petty Officer        (CPO-1)
8. Senior Chief Petty Officer (CPO-2)
9. Master Chief Petty Officer (CPO-3)

Commissioned Officers

10. Chief Warrant Officer (CWO-1) (Promoted from Petty Officer, 1st Class)
11. Chief Warrant Officer (CWO-2)
12. Chief Warrant Officer (CWO-3)
13. Chief Warrant Officer (CWO-4)

(Commisioned Officers from Academy or OCS Graduates)

14. Ensign        (O-1)
15. Lieutenant-JG (O-2)    (e.g., OPS of Bristol Bay)
16. Lieutenant    (O-3)    (e.g., XO of Bristol Bay)
17. Lt. Commander (O-4)    (e.g., CO of Bristol Bay)
18. Commander     (O-5)
19. Captain       (O-6)    (e.g., CO of Group Detroit)
20. Rear Admiral  (O-7)    (e.g., CO of Ninth District)
21. Vice Admiral  (O-8)
22. Admiral       (O-9)
23. Admiral       (O-10)   (e.g., Commandant of U.S. Coast Guard)
