A deep and steep standing wave develops between the two vessels. The
water really boils through the gap between the hulls. Besides mail and material,
men pass over this gap as well. Sometimes crew members are taken off or put aboard,
as are Great Lakes Pilots. All foreign flag vessels need pilots to guide
them through the Detroit River and other inland waters.
