[Photo: Preparing to cast off ] The Westscott was built in 1949 by Paasch Marine Service of Erie, Pennsylvania. She was recently refitted in 1992. Propulsion is provided by a single propeller driven by a Detroit Diesel.

[Photo: Captain at the wheel in pilothouse ] A special feature of the Westcott is the clear plexiglass roof of the pilot house. The see-thru roof allows the helmsman to maintain visual contact with the deskhands on the freighter some 25 feet above him.
