A friend of mine had a very similar-sounding problem with same engine on his 190 Nantucket. In his case it had nothing to do with the engine: there was plastic or other debris in the fuel tank that would occasionally slosh over to the fuel pickup.

Phil, my boat mostly lives on a lift now at my dock on Smith Mountain Lake VA. But I can probably make a pretty good estimate. Of course, the 16' Dauntless is probably a bit lower and my bimini probably isn't as high as a T-top, but it'll certainly be a lower bound for Hillbilly's considerations.

I don't see anything too serious. The only thing that catches my eye is the first close-up photo of the transom, it looks like the fiberglass skin might be peeling off the portside strake. That might turn into a somewhat larger area of repair than it first appears, but nothing here looks structural.

Also, I do not believe that the Dauntless 18 (or 180 Dauntless later in its life) was ever produced with a factory T-top, so it is almost certainly aftermarket. Thus it could be anything.

No, I didn't do any engine modification during my hydraulic steering installation. Looking at the photo of the Yamaha steering system, it looks virtually identical to the Mercury setup. I think it would be quite straightforward to install a Baystar system here.

When that happened with my 2003 169 Dauntless I used it as an excuse to upgrade to Baystar hydraulic steering. No regrets!
