Re: 1974 CURRITUCK 16 Re-power
I have a 1974 MONTAUK 17 that was re-powered with a new F70 Yamaha in January 2022. I am very happy with the Yamaha F70 engine for these reasons ⋅ instant starting ⋅ good fuel efficiency ⋅ runs at low engine speeds for hours without a hiccup ⋅ looks like it be...

Re: F70 Yamaha tachometer
SIM YAMAHA is the dealership I have actually ordered from.
I have checked some other online sellers and found the same situation.
I will check with a couple more dealers--a good idea.

Tachometer for Yamaha F70 Engine; Trolling Switch
I have a brand new Yamaha F70 outboard engine. The OEM Yamaha tachometer and wiring harness are on back order and very hard to find. Q1: will any brand marine tachometer work with a Yamaha F70? Q2: what are pitfalls to watch out for? Also: give me your first-hand experience with the Yamaha variable ...

Re: Enough Winter
We can use some real winter here in Nevada. After one huge storm in December, it’s been bone dry. Cold for awhile now just changed to unseasonably warm and dry. As a die hard fisherman and duck hunter, I watch the weather--not much of a winter here.

I think the F70 will be a much better option.
Curious if you can find one as I put a deposit down 5 months ago and still waiting for mine.

Re: Evinrude Rumors
The perception that you have to get a four-stroke engine to go on Lake Tahoe or some of the other lakes in California also hurt Evinrude. Yet the FACT that Mercury could not sell VERADO engines in California due to non-compliance with emissions is not considered as "hurting" Mercury? The ...

Re: Evinrude Rumors
The E-TEC engines seemed to be priced on the high side. I was never able to find what i considered a good price for an E-TEC within a reasonable distance from my house. The perception that you have to get a four-stroke engine to go on Lake Tahoe or some of the other lakes in California also hurt Evi...

Re: Scarcity of New Outboard Engines
I am caught up in this, too. [In February 2021] I made a down payment on a Yamaha F70 engine. I am buying from a large outboard engine dealer who sells Yamaha boats and normally has a large number of outboards in stock. I thought he would have a better chance to get [a loose engine for re-power]than...

Don’t use it when trolling, not really practical.

Re: Mercury Verado 600-HP V12
Great piece of technology.
But as a working man it’s a little over my budget.
Be more interested if Mercury can build a 75 HP that weighs less and wasn’t so physically big .

Negative information seems to come out first .
I see it on a duck hunting site I belong to. A problem with a expensive jacket, gun etc. A large number of people have good success/happy with something but the focus is on the negative. Human nature I guess.

Re: New Boston Whaler sales
I recently talked with a gentleman at The Outboard Motor Shop, a long time Whaler dealer in Oakland California. He said May was their busiest month ever in over 40 years of business. All boats they had were sold, and they are swamped with re-power jobs and other work. Also The Outboard Motor Shop ta...

Re: Closed Boat Launches and Marinas
I am dealing with [closed boat launch ramps] in California. My two favorite trout lakes in the northeast part of California are clear and ready to fish, but the ramps are blocked. April and May are best fishing times, and blocked ramps drive me nuts. I was never convinced that stopping recreational ...

I am [also planning] to re-power a 1973 Montauk, and, of course, I have same concerns as [SKIP BERRY has in re-powering his 1970 SAKONNET]. I have heard good reviews on the Mercury 90 and found a good price. But the physical size of the engine is a turn off after seeing one in person. Life's decisio...

Re: 1973 Montauk Re-power for a Fisherman
Well a bit of an update. Still checking prices and doing some more research but here goes. Suzuki is out because no dealer anywhere near me. The E-TEC—which was my preferred engine—seems to be priced on the high end. I just can't seem to find a good price on one in a reasonable [distance] from me. I...

Re: 1973 Montauk Re-power for a Fisherman
I appreciate the excellent responses. I generally troll for trout with lures at a slow 1.8-2.2 mph. Surprisingly my ancient 80 hp 3 cylinder merc trolls well at 2.3 mph when trimmed right. I have not yet determined if Etec has a slow rpm adjustment that has been mentioned but Yamaha does. I have bee...

1973 Montauk Re-power for a Fisherman
I have been toying with re-powering my 1973 Montauk 17 for a long time, and I am finally getting some encouragement from my wife. I am looking at the Yamaha F70, Tohatsu TLDI 90, and E-TEC 75 and 90. I have read many of the threads about re-powering over the years but I have a couple of twists. Firs...

Montauk Re-power with TOHATSU TLDI 90
Getting closer to re-powering a [1973] Montauk. I use my boat for fishing. I am intrigued by the Tohatsu TLDI 90. It seems like a good fit for the classic hull and is a good value. I just don't see them around here . A couple of people I respect have had good success with smaller Tohatsu engines. I ...
