I am very happy with my repower of my 1987 Outrage 18 with a F150 Yamaha. I do not think it is excessive, and I like having reserve power for when I have six people aboard.

What some folks do, myself included is cut the floor of the console so the battery box goes through the floor and rests on the deck below. I also put a block of wood under the floor down to the deck to help support the floor.

Q5: what engine do you have?
An older two-stroke-power-cycle engine under the boat shrink wrap cover would stink up the place badly.
Q6: where is the tank vent located?
Q7: is the fuel tank vent under the shrink-wrap cover?
That would stink the place up.

I wonder what Whaler used to seal the plastic through hull fitting with the first time? Most have failed.
Plastic needs a compatible sealer. Read the labels.
If it were my boat I would consider putting the new plastic through hull together with West System G/Flex epoxy.

Yes.
Maybe someone squeezed the oil line primer bulb and filled the carburetors.
Or your fuel system has an air leak and the VRO is over oiling.
There are a bunch of possibilities. You need an experienced tech to sort it out.
