Yamaha Engine Reliability
Yamaha Engine Reliability
[This author is] considering the purchase of a 2000 13-footer with a 2004 Yamaha F40. The 2004 Yamaha F40 engine has carburetors. What is the reliability of the 2004 Yamaha F40 engine? Thanks.
Re: reliability of a 2004 Yamaha 40 hp fourstroke engine
If it runs well when testing it should be ok. Any 12-year-old engine is a bit of a risk.

The Yamaha 40 hp fourstroke engine
Before purchasing check the compression of the motor. Good Luck. --Paul
Re: reliability of a 2004 Yamaha 40 hp fourstroke engine
A 2004 F40 has a smaller idle jet than did earlier F40's. It can be a bit fussy then when it comes to starting easily and idling well. Ethanol does not make life any easier. If you were to have a carburetor problem then many have been known to install a larger-size idle jet.
Otherwise, the F40 is as reliable and as dependable as any other Yamaha outboard motor.
But no matter what, if you buy the motor keep the fuel supply clean and well filtered. Don't let old fuel sit unused in the carburetors or trouble will be brewing.
