2007 MONTAUK Rub Rail Color Restoration

Postby Whalerdog » Wed Nov 11, 2015 8:24 pm

My 2007 Montauk rub rail has a few spots or section about 12-inches on transom that are not really black. The rest of the rub rail looks good. I use 303 Protectant on it, and I have tried Back to Black by Meguiars.

Is there any way other way to treat [the sections that do not look black]?

Thanks

I would clean [the rub rail] with something strong, rinse well and follow with 303 Protectant. If that failed [to restore the black color] I would consider some very fine sandpaper in a small area. I would use it very lightly to see if the black is just below the surface. If the black returns in the small area I would continue with the rest.

Wet sand with WD40. Also try hydraulic steering fluid. Whenever I've seen hydraulic steering fluid spill on black vinyl, it seems to be very good at restoring the color.

Another product that works after wet sanding is Penetrol. It is in the paint department.

Then again, it's rubrail. If it doesn't have some damage, you need to spend more time on the water. (humor!)

best thing I found was Mequiars Fine Cut 105 with foam randon orbital buffer and Mequiars back to black with three daily applications. Acutally black and shiny again. Thanks for all the help.

Lacquer thinner is one of the best and fastest ways to bring a rubrail back to life, remove scuffs and clean.

To make it shine, I do 2 coats of 90 weight gear lube on it every season and touch up as needed.

Well it's wrapped for the year. I'll try it next year Jeff. Thanks all!
