Re: 2014 Montauk 170 Mounting Trolling Motor on Bow

I have a 2020 170 Montauk with the split rail. There is room in between the rails and the forward navigation lamp. I really would prefer not to drill into my boat if there is a rail mounting option for a trolling motor.

Q1: if I did have to drill [into the deck of the 170 MONTAUK at the bow to create a mount for a trolling motor] is it possible to not have to cut the rail?

To just mount [a trolling motor] on the railing and have the batteries upfront somewhere would be nice.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Give me advice on bow mounting a trolling motor that does not involve cutting the bow railings on my 2020 170 MONTAUK with split railings.

I doubt that attaching a trolling motor to a bow railing on a 170 MONTAUK would be an effective long-term solution. Generally a bow-mounted trolling motor is mounted at deck level to a base plate that is securely fixed to the hull structure.

A method of attaching a removable base for a trolling motor at the bow that avoids drilling holes into the hull or deck is demonstrated in a long and illustrated article in the forum archives at

This method perhaps could be adapted for the 170 MONTAUK.
