Replace wood at console bottom

Postby o8er » Sat May 04, 2024 12:38 pm

Two glassed-in boards used to secure a console to a deck [of an unidentified year, length, and model of a what may be a Boston Whaler boat] need replacing.

I'd prefer not to [replace the glassed-in boards] with new glassed-in boards. I may [repair the console by] gluing-in PVC boards instead; the boards aren't seen.

Also, I would like to replace the “false floor.” The “false floor” appears to be made with 1/2-inch plywood. I plan to replace the “false floor” with 3/4-inch plwood or with COOSA BOARD. 1/2 ply came out but thinking 3/4 marine may be better, or perhaps something like Coosa board?

Also, I may use longer aluminum L-brackets.

Q1: is my assumption correct that the designation “false floor” refers to a shelf provided in the console?

ASIDE: when seeking advice about a particular boat, please mention the model year, the model, and the length.

Q2: what is the model year, model, and length of the boat where this console is used?

Assuming you wanted comments: using 3/4-inch marine plywood as a stiffener or reinforcement or as a material to accept self-tapping screw fasteners is much preferred over using PVC sheet material of unspecified thickness. If marine plywood is coated with quality paint or sealed with epoxy resin, it should have a long service life.

I have a 1986 Montauk 17.

Because of easier repair than using wood and “glassing” over it, I was thinking about using 3/4 x 4-inch PVC “boards” to replace the glassed-in boards that the aluminum L-bracket and bolts attach the console to the deck.

Q3: should I use PVC “boards instead of wood to reinforce the console?

Regarding the shelf, I don’t know if it is original or was made by the prior owner. The shelf is made with 1/2-inch plywood. I plan to use 3/4-inch marine plywood for added strength. Or to make the shelf just as rigid but lighter I could use COOSA BOARD or some other composite material.

Or, maybe 1/2-inch plywood is fine—I don't know.

Q4: what material would be best for the shelf?

The thickness of the shelf depends on what you want to store in the console. If you are going to add heavy
batteries, use thicker plywood and reinforce how it is attached to the console.
