Due to the unexpected demise of the Johnson 235, ever faithful, but trustable (don't think so), I am looking at the Yamaha 250 HPDI for the repower of an '82 Outrage 25. Opinions and hearsay welcomed. Twins are not practical for my lifestyle, i.e. inland waters, slow trolling and, too much going on in my life, but will probably be considered for the next repower. Ain't whalers grand!

Some people are harping on the short comings of these motors when they first came out. If you bought a new one today from a good dealer then you will have one of the best motors on the water. First, their is something like 2 recalls out on the engines from then they first came out. These problems with the oil rod, and a fowling problem have been solved. But you must make sure this has been done. Second is that you MUST use 87 or 89 octane. Anything else will cause a fowling problem. And the last is that you must use series 27 batteries to have it run properly. Dont let this scare you! All new DFI engines need this too! The 250 hpdi is a great motor. If you can afford it get it. Having said that, I would also recommend that you look at the 250 ficht made by bomb. Also in sept the new 300 hpdi comes out. Just my rantings!

Where is TRAFFICLAWYER when we need him.

You might also look at the hot new 250 HP Optimax from Mercury performance division.
Get the HP you're paying for. I hear they're putting out 275 hp and nothing will keep up with them in the 250 range. Whaler is using these on the new 320 Outrage.
