I had a 115 (same basic engine) on a 17 and it trolled very well. The current owner still catches alot of fish trolling off Maui. I found that the prop made a huge difference, and kept the engine from surging when it transitions from low to high RPM (carb circuit) I ended up usung a HighFive Merc, and I think it was a 21' prop. Good fishing! |

I have a 1985 Mercury 115 inline mounted on a 1974 Montauk, motor is very similar to yours. These motors weigh ~290-305 pounds. I haven't trolled with mine but it does idle down smoothly. The later adi ignitions seem much more adept for long periods of idling or trolling. Brian |

What are "adi ignitions"? |

ADI is an alternater driven ignition, or non distributer. On the inline motors it came out in 1985, these are the best inlines in my opinion. They also had an idle stabilizer and can idle at a bit lower rpm. The inlines have never been known for fantastic idle quality. If you are going to troll with one for extended periods its important that it be tuned perfectly. Brian |

"ADI" or "Alternator driven ignition"..what most outboard motor have used since the 1970's. I just never heard that term before. |

On the in-line 6's, distributor-less ignition I think was started in 1983. A friend had one of these on his 1983 Montauk. The 90-115hp 1984-85 Merc 6's are identical, with the brown-yellow striping, and weigh 305# power trim. I have a pair of these on my 18 Outrage, shown in the reference section article about transom brackets. They have tiny "bleed restictors" in them, on 5 of the 6 cylinders, which greatly affect idle smoothness, and which have a tendency to get harmlessly sucked through the engine. Be sure all 5 are in place for the best idle. I have trolled a thousand hours on mine, and find them quite good at this task. |
