I went fishing last Saturday and the non-skid area got really dirty. It was stained with footprints, fish slime, etc. I tried cleaning the deck with a boat brush and ‘Starbrite’ non-skid deck cleaner. After 3 applications and a lot brushing, there were still a bunch of stains remaining.

Is there anything out there that will effectively clean and/or remove stains from the non-skid areas?

I know it's not that great of an idea, but every once in a while I break down and use some heavy artillery. aka, Bleach and soft scrub, or even a little comet. I know, these are harsh chemicals.... But Sometimes I just want to see the deck nice and clean.

The newer whaler decks are a big pain to keep clean. Your best bet is to not let "non-boaters" walk all over your deck with dirty black sole shoes. I bust my butt to keep the decks clean so I don't have to scrub so much.

I have used "Barkeepers Friend " for years on boats.I now use "Woody Wax" on anti skid surfaces good for about two months just wash off with water and stiff brush.Note I clean anti skid with "Barkeeps" first than fresh water rinse for next couple of months.

I spray my decks down with Simple Green, let it set a bit, then use a 2800psi power washer.

One of these days, I'm going to try this 'Barkeepers Friend' stuff...but the power washer is indispensible.

Hello,
Great stuff, I agree.

www.barkeepersfriend.com

Most grocery stores and old school hardware stores carry it around here.

Thanks

Please be careful using pressure washers. I read a thread awhile back that gelcoat pitting can happen. Mark

Combination bleach and Tide, nasty stuff but about the only thing that will clean my boat.

Thank you very much everyone. I will give your suggestions a try as well as implement that “No black sole shoes on my boat” policy.

I have become a fanatic about the boat shoes only rule.

Any of the available deck cleaners with oxalic acid.

Everything I have heard is that products containing bleach will damage the non-skid.

I used them for a while, and they sure do clean well. But I think my non-skid has been damaged or degraded a little.

Another question, is what do people use to remove the UV oxidation that dulls the non-skid?

Lhg: I read on THT that Woody Wax is the greatest thing since sliced bread for UV oxidation and such. I have no personal experience with it but Dauntless18 posted above that he uses it on his non-skid. Maybe someone else with Woody Wax experience could elaborate.

I know I have been told by some that bleach is bad for the gell coat but seems to be the only thing that cleans that beautiful white back to normal. Used bleach for over a year with just a pretty boat to show for it. I have heard great things about woody wax.

Whaler in there maintance section states to not use detergents that contain ammonia or chlorine. Also do not use porcelain cleaning powders they contain chlorine and are too abrasive.Lots of fresh water washing and doing it right after useing boat works great for me.I do not let scum line or salt deposits stay on boat or stains on anti skid overnight.I wax sides and topsides every 3mos. during season with 3M Marine Protective Liquid Wax and now Woody Wax on anti skid.I find this system of cleaning to keep my Whaler looking good

I use softscrub too. I have read other nonskid forums and everyone has a woody over woody wax, so Im gunna get some too, "the wax that is.."

Just a thought....
What if you had a 20 year old blond in a t-back scubbing your diamond no skid, would it matter how long it took?

Swellmonster, just remember "a little dab will do you".When I first applied Woody Wax I put too much on. It did not take me long to learn to apply it very lightly and spread with lots of water and a medium bristle brush. The stuff really goes a long way.

I put some on a formica kichen cabinet last nite. Let it soak in overnight. Buffed it down this morning, looks good, but still looks wet.

Yesterdays project was to install the transducer for my new sonar. Had to pull the tank racks mounted in the stern to access the tunnel. I don't know when, if ever these had been removed but i do know that it was an ugly sight underneath. I never thought I would be able to remove the stains completely but wanted to get the loose stuff up to get a good surface to reinstall. Sprayed some of the new "Automotive Formula" Simple Green on the stains and they immediatly starte to melt away. Went at it with a scrub brush and in no time had the floor looking like new. Good stuff.

p.s. no water dripped from the screw holes when I removed the old transducer. YEE HAW!

D-18,
Tell me exactly how you did it or wished to do it. Do you spray in on the sides and let it drip down then brush it around or what?

Swellmonster, the first time I used product I cleaned anti skid with "Barkeepers Friend" first. Than I put two or three drops of "Woody Wax"in each corner of anti skid panel on deck and two or three drops in center of anti skid panel.I than wet hand brush and spread wax around panel.Ilet it set about ten mintues and than flushed it off .I did the panels one at a time.I have done anti skid on boat twice this summer the second time I put on"Woody Wax" it was much shinney than first applacation. After you brush it into anti skid and before you flush it off with fresh water it looks like a wet oily mix on deck.I found by useing lots of water I got a no slip deck. After it dries I wipe it with a towel.Hope this helps you.

D18,
You werent kidding! Just a few drops here and there. I really hope it helps the front area on the sides where a lil skid is. That always gets so dirty. How nice is it on the gunnels?
Im gunna do it this weekend!

Also, another whaler bud reccomended this stuff. He raves about it! Check out the web site.

Okay, now I'm intrigued by this 'Woody Wax' stuff.

What is it? A wax, or a cleaner? Both? Is it designed especially for boats/fiberglass?Where do you get it?

Please tell me more.

Dave

Hello,
The stuff worked for me. Little goes a long way. Follow the directions and let sit.
