Re: Epoxy Barrier Coat
I don't understand you comments. Are you endorsing Hydrocoat SR? Or are you endorsing a difference product, Hydrocoat? I'm happy with the Petit epoxy barrier coat and the Hydrocoat bottom paint that lasted three years. Based on that good experience, I decided to spend the extra ~$50 to try the SR v...

Re: Epoxy Barrier Coat
I'll second [the recommendation to use barreir coat and anti-fouling paint made by] Petit. [Four years ago] I purchased a 1994 Grady While Sailfish 272 that had never been bottom painted. I applied [Petit] epoxy barrier coat followed by one coat of red Hydrocoat and two coats of black Hydrocoat. I b...

Re: Center Console 15 with Cracked Transom
Okay - OP here closing out this thread. The Whaler with the crack was so pretty I couldn't walk away even though I knew that I should. It has a new 2014 F70 that is still in warranty with nice wood and cushions and I really liked the center console style. I made an offer about 30% less than his aski...

Re: Center Console 15 with Cracked Transom
I doubt that water getting into the foam is the problem, but more that the water in the transom is rotting and swelling the wood in the transom and exerting pressure on the glass... Interesting thought - I probably should have mentioned that the boat is in a cold climate state. Perhaps the water in...

Re: Center Console 15 with Cracked Transom
The boat was covered, so the dark water stain from each drain tube is actually water leaking from the inside of the transom to the outside. That is also clear on the port-side tube above. Also, on the left side of the port-side photo, there is a pinhole with the same dark stain. Also, I think the lo...

Center Console 15 with Cracked Transom
Hi. I'm looking at 15-foot Boston Whaler boats. I found a Center Console 15 I like, but the transom looks a bit scary. The first photo (which needs to be rotated 90 degrees to the right) shows a long crack nearly the full length of the transom from top to bottom. You can see at the bottom the stain ...

Re: Moisture Meter Readings
The pin moisture meters measure resistance. The wetter the wood, the lower the resistance. The pinless meters use an electromagnetic field generated at some frequency. Both are calibrated for wood. Pure fiberglass with no wood core tests low or zero. One new development - the guy at my Club whose bo...

Moisture Meter Readings
I'm [considering buying one of] three 11-foot Boston Whaler boats. I found all to test high with a functioning moisture meter. They were uniformly high all over, both above and below the waterline. The boats did not feel heavy and sounded okay with tapping the hulls. Is there a problem or a concern ...
