I have taken a bit of a plunge and bought a 1985 Boston Whaler OUTRAGE 18 boat that does not require a major rebuild--I hope. It did cost more but I think can I do this work. The OUTRAGE 18 appears to be a solid boat even if it is 30-years old. It does not appear to have been an abused boat. But, I can tell that the repairs it has had used bits and pieces that were not intended for marine use.

The 1985 OUTRAGE 18 is going to need some work, but I will learn as I go. It will need some minor to medium fiberglass and gel-coat repair. The electrical set up is old but does mostly work. The transom is in solid shape. The outboard engine has not been run for a couple of years but has under 100-hours. The trailer is in fair to good shape. It is a tandem-axle aluminum trailer with no obvious corrosion. The rollers, tires, and carpet boards appear solid.I will know more when I get the boat off and inspect closely.

I plan on addressing the outboard engine first. It does not appear to be in bad shape. I will inspect and repair any obvious problems, clean or replace spark plugs, fog the cylinders, change the fuel filter, change the gear oil, flush the water pump, maybe put some kind of lubrication to soften things up, empty and clean the gas tank , check out the hoses, and put in a water tank;. Then I will see if it will start.

I am going to need some advise from the group as this project proceeds. I will place some of the question and solicit advise under appropriate subject headings.

Hello GEORGIAGUY. You have chosen a great hull. The OUTRAGE 18 is an excellent boat and is extremely versatile.

Your report that the boat transom appears to be in sound and strong condition is good news. A transom rebuild is something to avoid if possible.

I agree with your choice of a boat in sound condition instead of a less expensive boat that will need a total makeover.

Outboard engines can be quite durable, but ones that sit for several years will need some attention, as you seem to be aware.
