Hello all--Let me re-introduce myself to the group. I was a long time contributor back about 10 years ago. As it happens, life and kids got in the way and I sold my 1987 Montauk in 2012 and more or less stopped visiting the forum. Now my two oldest are off in college, so I have somehow convinced myself that I will have more time for a boat again. I just closed the deal on a 1987 Super Sport Limited 15 with a 1999 Yamaha 70-HP. This particular boat was a tender on a yacht for much of its life, hence the big brackets on the sides.











I suspect you'll be hearing from me as I dig into this classic and see what's what. This will be my first 15-footer, so there is a lot to learn. Honestly I know very little about this model as I've always had more "classic" mahogany interior models in the past. IF you have any model-specific advice, please speak up.
 
I wanted to say "Hi" and I'm glad to see few names I recognize still slumming around.

Will it be just the two of you cruising in the bays, rivers or are you getting back into professional slalom skiing?

Hah--I can’t believe you still have that photo, Phil. What the heck would possess you to save something like that? Haha.

Yeah, the boat’s in pretty decent shape, but kinda typical for it’s age. There are plenty of little things to fix and holes to patch, but for a 33-year-old hull those things are to be expected. Price seemed more than reasonable. I just hope it’s not the “red-headed step child” of the Whaler family.

[The SSL 15 boats] are just a classic 15-footer without the wood. A tad heavier because of that but no major difference.

The water seen at the ramp in the images above looks a bit greenish, and perhaps the hull has a bit of stain. But some hull cleaner ought to get rid of that. The Yamaha 70-HP three-cylinder is a great classic carburetor outboard engine.

Yes sir...it’s got the patina of a 33 year old boat, but I think it’s mechanically sound, and the problems I’ve seen are mostly cosmetic and easily repaired/patched/replaced. I just picked it up today, so the project list is starting. :)

The hull looks much better in your photo gallery than in Figure 1. I don’t see any discoloration from green water.

The Yamaha engine looks quite decent under the cowling. The paint has held up well.

A 15-footer with a 70-HP should be a lot of fun.
