Hi all,

I'm the new owner of a 1987 Super Sport Ltd with the rear casting platform. It has some old brackets and screws that need to be removed/replaced and I would like to add other brackets to the underside for holding a paddle. I am ASSUMING that this is some sort of wood core with fiberglass on the top/bottom, but I'm not sure.

Is anyone familiar with the construction of these things? It's quite sturdy. I don't want to go through the top deck of course or weaken what I currently have.

Anyone have any advice here on the proper way to attach new brackets from the underside? I suspect short stainless wood screws set in sealant will do the trick(?)

Pic #2 shows the wood core and that is how thick it is. You can buy clips to hold a paddle at West Marine, might be where the navigation lights are. If you do thru bolt them it would not look that bad. Use a sealant on the screws. Those hinges look good.

Given how clean the top surface is, I offer this:

Consider mounting wood blocking (seal with epoxy) with 4200 where you want to install screws. This will allow you to avoid piercing the gelcoated exterior top.

BTW - Consider adding wide washer or a backing plate to the underside of lid to spread load of the hinge fasteners.

Another way of attaching the wood piece, like Phil suggested is using the West Epoxy system, with one of their additives, 404 for high strength.

Instead of the 105 epoxy, consider G/Flex Thickened. It would allow for a bit of flexing (think standing on it's deck), and vibration resistance. The great advantage of their system, is that they have product support specialists that are more then willing to help, and suggest that are only a phone call away.
