Capacity Plate: Seven Questions

Q1: Where can I source [replacements for the two capacity plates seen below which are from an older 13-foot hull and are located adjacent to each other]?

Having two capacity plates is unusual. Perhaps the newer one was added due to the older one being illegible.

Q3: Is the capacity plate in Figure 1 the original capacity plate?

That seems a good inference due to its weathered appearance.

Q4: Are both original capacity plates?

They both appear to be from Boston Whaler; but it would not be likely that both were applied at the factory at the time of manufacture. I would infer perhaps the newer plate was obtained and applied sometime after the boat left the factory.

Q5: Are they both from the factory?

Q6:Where is the proper placement of these?

The Federal Boating Safety Act of 1971 sets out the requirements for these capacity plates. See

for details. Contact the United States Coast Guard for advice about the location of the capacity plate. I believe the USCG is the agency that would promulgate any regulation about the location of the capacity plate. Putting a replacement capacity plate in about the same location as these two were positioned should be perfectly good placement. I would expect that the capacity plate must be attached to the hull, so in a older 13-footer the most logical place for a capacity plate that specifies engine horsepower would be on the inboard face of the transom.

Q8: What was the location of these capacity plates position on the hull when you photographed them?

I don't understand if you are asking about the measurements of the hull shown on the capacity plate, or if you are asking about the size of the two capacity plates, or if you are asking if there is a federal requirement about the size of a capacity plate. Please explain what measurement you are asking about.

On closer observation of the hard-to-read capacity plate, it appears to be related to some particular state law. Perhaps it was added by the factory because the boat was being delivered to a state that had some specific requirements for capacity labels. Check the boating law in your state for details.
