Hello all. I am new to the forum. I have been a member of other sites for many years. We are a repair shop in Ft. Lauderdale the first larger Boston Whaler boat we have restored is a 1989 Boston Whaler 22 Outrage with a Yamaha F225XNCA, with Alwgrip paint, with a new fuel tank, and with new wiring.

Q2: What was your process for fairing the sides?
Q3: Did you use primer and paint to spray the hull or did you spray gelcoat? The non skid on the gunwale looks like paint.
Q4: Did you do glass to fill the console dash to spray?
Q5: Was it paint or gelcoat? It looks nice.
Q6: Did you spray AWLGRIP paint?
It look likes a professional job you have done. Many on this forum are DIY enthusiast and would like some input with the process of all was done in case we have similar project. It really looks top notch and very professional.

A1, A2: We sanded down the sides with a DA first, they applied AWLFAIR with a long straight trowel, then longboard sanded the hull sides, prepped for primer.
A3: We used AWLGRIP primers and paint. The non-skid is AWLGRIP NonSkid, done by spray method.
A4: The dash was made with a piece of FRP we cut out of a pre-made sheet we get, cut to size, routed, primed and painted.
A5: Thank you. We use the pre-made FRP sheeting to make panels, gauge filler panels, etc, we find it to be cleaner, cheaper and looks better without a ton of cost and dust.
A6: Yes, the whole boat was done with AWLGRIP, in a complete project, it ends up being a better finish that will last longer, IMO. I come from a large boat background where polyurethane paint is king.

Thank you for sharing the progress on your restoration. I'm the owner of a 1991 22' Outrage Whaler Drive with some considerable restoration work completed but original gelcoat and fuel tank. However I have always contemplated what it would look like to restore the entire boat using AWLGRIP.

I've worked with gelcoat a good bit, and have read where some folks are using AWLGRIP instead of gelcoat.
[Five] questions:
Q12: Do you mix and spray AWLGRIP like an automotive finish base coat and clear coat?
Q13: Is a special gun required?
Spraying or rolling gelcoat is quite a mess and a chore, hence my interest in AWLGRIP application, if simpler and easier as with a base and clear coat application.
Q14: How does AWLGRIP hold up to weather topside?
Q15: How does AWLGRIP hold up underwater?
Q16: [Does AWLGRIP have] as good or better [durability] than gelcoat?

A concern with using a polyurethane paint like AWLGRIP below the water line is that many of us will beach our boats on a sandy surface. I've beached my renovated 1973 21' Outrage maybe a dozen times--but only for brief periods because I know that the paint applied on the bottom is thinner then gel coat resin.
For spot refinishing, the newer poly[urethane paint]s are great once the paint color is matched.
You could probably use poly[urethane paint] [on the hull sides down to the waterline, to where the vertical hull sides meet the edge of the bottom.
One weathering [problem] absent with a poly[urethane paint] is chalking or fading as occurs with gelcoat. However, with gel coat on the topside, you can get away with some pretty aggressive grit when polishing. Even to the point of wet sanding in the 1000 to 2000 grit range prior to wheeling with multiple compounds, thence waxing.

A11: The bow railing was OEM, and it did have a pulpit section, which we removed.

A15: AWLGRIP doesn't work underwater. It will get blisters after about ten days in the water

A17: The blue mats seen in many illustrations are Eagle Cover Guard material to give protection for the deck and other areas.
