1980 OUTRAGE 20: Give Advice To Strengthen Delaminated Hull

Postby dr john » Sat Dec 14, 2024 12:03 pm

In order to strengthen previous hull repairs to [delaminated areas of] my 1980 OUTRAGE 20, I plan to drill multiple half-inch diameter holes and inject two-part polyurethane [of some unspecified material].

Give me advice on other methods.

BACKSTORY
On my 1980 OUTRAGE 20 the [exterior side of the] hull [has delaminated from the foam interior and] can be pushed in by hand in an area of four by eight feet from amidship towards the bow, The foam has broken loose [from the] thin, [now] flexible [laminate]. I made several repairs to a one-foot rectangle. A recent repair [was made] along a cracked chine. These repairs involved injecting polyurethane one-part foam.

These have held, but the thought of more inevitable cracks and holes due to failed hull integrity and future repairs leaves me wanting to get rid of the boat I have had for 44 years.

The other areas of the hull are okay.

In 2023 the hull was soda blasted. A barrier coat [applied] years ago held. There was no significant water in the hull at end of [the 2024] season.

I no longer trust the hull [to be safe or to have strength or integrity or durability or some unspecified characteristic].

In order to restore the bond that previously existed between the hull laminate layer and the interior foam on the Unibond hull of your 1980 OUTRAGE 20 boat, you need to use a strong adhesive.

The best adhesive to bond a cured polyester resin laminate to a cured foam is a marine epoxy resin.

Before attempting to use a marine epoxy resin to restore the bond between the hull laminate and the foam, both the laminate and foam must be dry and free of moisture.

Using vacuum bagging would be a preferred method to create uniform pressure to hold the two components together while the epoxy resin cures completely. If not familiar with using epoxy resin and vacuum bagging techniques, hire the work to be done by an experienced fiberglass repair artisan who is familiar with Unibond hull construction.
