So my dad and I bought a boat
This all started when a customer came in with a 40 hp Tohatsu. We finally gave in and decided to buy it. After a while another customer of ours gave us a lead for a Boston Whaler 13 and we bought it also after some negotiating. The boat is from 1970 and is in decent shape (foam is solid). We've sandblasted it and we hope to have it ready for paint by the end of this month.

The day we got her back from sandblasting, we could see a bit better how much work the hull needed. It's going to be a job but I've seen worse.

Looks like a fun project. How is the transom?

We've checked it by using the pounding method. Until now we've found that everything is solid.

Re: So my dad and I bought a boat
After a 25-day delay I've managed to start on the boat. I was at least a helping hand in it.
After first adding a polyester filler to all the holes that were left after sandblasting, we've applied 1.5-ounce fiberglass mat at the transom and side of the boat.

After glassing we've started adding a marine body filler called Power Grip. It's softer than usual fillers which makes it easier to grind. We will add one or two more layers before painting.

Re: So my dad and I bought a boat
We finished off the fairing starting with p60 grit paper, then p140 grit paper, and then ending with p220 grit paper. The fairing has been going well, so far. Only problem we've seen is that the body filler formed some notches. We wanted to fix this by using Total Boat primer, which the paint company said can fix notches.

Re: So my dad and I bought a boat
Being a brush-on primer and quite thick, we decided to use a thinner to make it possible to spray on. This made for some small holes.

To counter the small holes that resulted from using a thinned primer and spraying it on, we tried rolling on the primer. It helped fill the holes. We sanded the primer and added a light primer.

Re: So my dad and I bought a boat
After the second primer, there were some minor detail that our fiberglass specialist wanted to fix. Those repairs took some extra time, but we managed to get the bottom painted using Total Boat white paint. It's looking great. All the boat needs now is a nice polishing job before we flip her.

I would have tossed that boat. What you did was nothing short of miraculous. Well done!

Thankyou sir, much appreciated.
Before anyone asks.. Yes I'd do it all over again xD
Re: So my dad and I bought a boat
Very nice job. Would love to see some pics of the finished product. What year is she? Does she have a number?
Re: So my dad and I bought a boat
Love it. The restoration of the boat, and your spraying the boat wearing flip flops. --- Two things I would have never taken on myself.

Re: So my dad and I bought a boat
Thank you, all, for your replies.
From our research this Whaler was built in 1970. We haven't done much work on her lately, but we do hope to continue soon. I've also started work on a 40-foot lobster boat design by Donald Blount, of which I'll share pictures soon.
In regard to the [wearing] flip-flops [why applying spray paint]; we do live on an island, after-all; wearing them is pretty much a standard here.

Re: So my dad and I bought a boat
Well... it happened.
I sold my Whaler 13... my personal Whaler 13.
It has been hands-down the best first boat ever.
I've had more experiences and memories with that boat than I can count.
My favorite memory is still when I jumped a wave and got about 2.5 meters of air.
This is the first boat my dad and I restored which has taken us about 6 years.
What makes this boat special is that it was my first boat and also the first boat
to be restored with parts that we got solely from our shop.
The new owner is extremely happy with her and I trust him to take good care of her.
I'm am looking to buy a Whaler 16 after we sell the other Whaler 13.
I already have a list of custom mods I want to do to it which can be found on another thread I've started.

Jr.
The result looks great. It is so easy when you can man-handle these boats, turning them over, taking them off and on a trailer, even just lifting OB on and off.
Great job, I hope you'll enjoy her a little before you sell.

She's a beauty. Congrats and thanks for posting all the pics as I've never seen a transom down to the bare wood before (pic 828).
I look forward to the pics of your new project.

Re: So my dad and I bought a boat
Thankyou everyone,
I haven't post much lately since I've been awfully busy with work.
We did get a new trailer which we restored. Still have some minor adjustments to do.
Boat has also been painted inside, engine has been added finally and now we're prepping for minor details.
Enjoy :)

Re: So my dad and I bought a boat
Since the buyer wanted a lighter colour,
compared to the first Whaler 13 we sold him (my first Whaler 13)
We decided to use a more baby blue colour.
It came out decent and adding the anti-slip went well too.
Pics will follow.

Continued;
Interior paint has been added. Since we couldn't get the original paint,
we decided to mix white with blue. The paint looks good but just a little bit of green
will bring you closer to the original colour.

As promised, here's also a picture of the 40 foot lobster yacht I'm helping to build.
I'll post more pictures of the real boat as we get along.

Re: So my dad and I bought a boat
Here we have some more picture of the rigging.
The steering system we used is a bit of an older tech than
what most other boats have but we decided to use it instead because
of its simplicity and its space saving benefits.

Re: So my dad and I bought a boat
Well guys we've done it, we've finished the boat.
Got to say that this build was one of trail and error but after much reworking, after much sweating, and after much whatever came out of our mouths, we've finally finished the boat.
The Tohatsu 40 is performing better than ever. I honestly have never ridden a better balanced boat than this one.
It's light, it's agile, and it looks like it just came from the factory.
I'd like to thank my dad who wen't through the project with me at every step, my glass mechanic who thought me the do's and don't of glassing, and my buyer who pushed me to do better at every step.
Lastly i'd also like to thank you the audience for all the compliments and support.
This is not the end of the road though for I have more projects coming very soon.
I'll keep you all posted as soon as the first new project gets started :D

A goodbye is yet to come (hopefully not soon)
For now, enjoy the last picture of the build.
Look long enough and you'll appreciate every detail that went in to here.

Thankyou sir. I do have my eye on an 01 Dauntless 18'
I'm getting lots of thought on how to modify and make it better, but for now the next project is still pretty much open.

That was a really nice restoration .I gave my son our 13 foot and hope sometime soon he will take an interest in restoring it .I would love to do a project like that with him so he would have something to be proud of and take care of it ,rather then just leaving it sit .

Hi everyone,
First of, I'm back!
I took a short break from continuouswave more to keep my focus on school, my new business, and most of all 'boats'
My builds will be posted under my new handle from now on and off-course, I have a new build waiting for you all to see.
Hope you will all enjoy, and make sure to keep your eyes open for: So my dad and I bought a boat 2
