Under-cover rubber gasket for a Honda BF 90A

The rubber gasket which is placed between the lower unit "under-cover" and the "extension case" of my 1998 Honda 90 has fallen out. Pushing it back in place does not work. My engine manual shows me that I have to take the whole lower unit apart. Anybody have experience with leaving this out or perhaps filling the joint with silicon until next lower unit service?
