Baystar Steering

I may replace the Teleflex cable steering with the [DOMETIC] Baystar HK400A-3 kit [on a 2002 MONTAK 17 with a Yamaha F90].

I plan to cut off the old cable to remove it instead of having to remove the engine.

My main concern is that it sounds like I may actually need to cut off part of the engine clamp brackets in order for the engine to fully tilt up based on looking at the Baystar instructions.

[Will I need to cut off part of the engine clamp bracket]?

[TO ANYONE WHO CUT OFF PART OF THE CLAMP BRACKET OF A YAMAFA F90 TO INSTALL BAYSTAR STEERING: show me images or motion pictures of that installation] so I have something to go with. I will much appreciate them.

Also give any tips or thoughts.

This is from a 160 Dauntless with a 115 Mercury, but it may help give you an idea of what the project would look like. http://continuouswave.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=3456

My thoughts as requested:

I do not see any “engine clamp bracket” in your illustration at Figure 1. The F90 looks like it has a standard BIA mount bracket without any clamps.

Explain better what you think must be removed in order to use the DOMETIC Baystar product you mentioned.

I don’t think BOB (Golden Daze) cut off any part of the mounting bracket on his engine.

I would call DOMETIC Baystar and get their advice. I have no recollection of anyone reporting the need to take a hacksaw to a Yamaha F90 in order to install hydraulic steering.

No, I didn't do any engine modification during my hydraulic steering installation. Looking at the photo of the Yamaha steering system, it looks virtually identical to the Mercury setup. I think it would be quite straightforward to install a Baystar system here.

Thanks. I did see the Dauntless writeup. It will for sure come in handy.

See from the instructions below where it says: "Engine clamp brackets must be modified...." This may be necessary for Yamaha.

You do not have a "clamp-on" bracket. Your engine is has a bolt on bracket.

No modification necessary.

I see the callout in the instructions that talks about cutting or grinding the bracket, and I see in your original photo the small "tab" that sticks down from where the steering cable enters the engine bracket. But I don't see how leaving it there would be an interference problem. In particular, the photo below from my installation does not look like there's any part of the Baystar system that hangs below the bracket.

And if worst comes to worst, then just cut the tabs off with a Dremel.

Supposedly the [interference between the Yamaha F90 engine mount and the DOMETIC Baystar hydraulic steering occurs] when you tilt the engine all the way up: the hydraulic [actuator--Callout 8 in the diagram above] will hit the engine mounting tabs--not a huge deal. I was just trying to get a clearer idea of what I would need to tackle [to install Baystar hydraulic steering on the Yamaha F90 engine].

Grinding off those [mounting ear extensions] is no big deal. Their removal does not present any structural problems. I am not sure why they even have them--nobody mounts an engine all the way down. And it is unlikely they would hold the engine on if somebody did mount an engine that low.
