My dad gave me and my boys his 1972 Currituck. It’s in great shape. The boat really just needs some TLC. However the side console sits very low and needs replacing. There are small spider cracks on the gunwale.

Q1: can the wooden side console of a 1972 CURRITUCK be replace by a wooden center console?

Installing a new center console does not require that a professional boat builder must be used. However changing a CURRITUCK into a center console model like a NAUSET will involve much more than just installing a center console. New seating will be needed. The helm steering and cables will need to be moved. All outboard engine rigging will need to be moved and some cables may need to be replaced if their length is not sufficient. Conversion to a center console will be a significant project in re-rigging.

If I wanted to do the work myself, are there multiple sources for the wooden consoles that come pre-cut, stained and coated?

I believe scalable drawings are available which include wood consoles. Some may be adaptable to meet your requirements. Kits, as far as I know, are unavailable. A competent carpenter should be able to cut the required pieces for assembly. For a slightly higher cost a carpenter my be willing to assemble the pieces for you.

A site search should find a source for drawings.

Ward Grafton sells excellent drawings of all sorts of wooden components for Boston Whaler classic 13-foot and 16-foot boats, and the prices are quite reasonable. There is a link to Ward’s website in the REFERENCE article on drawings.
