I am just starting a complete restoration of an 1989 OUTRAGE 18. I already bought a Yamaha F150. I suspect that [the boat] will be fully operational by April 2017.

The reports I have read in regard to putting the 150-HP four-stroke-power-cycle engine on [a classic Boston Whaler OUTRAGE 18 boat] are [for a top boat speed of] 42 to 45-MPH. I couldn't find anything on [accelerating from a standing start at maximum throttle], but I did read about porpoising. I already bought a plate to jack up the height a bit, as [porpoising] is caused by the increased weight; I plan on moving battery forward to the console; it belongs there anyway.

With the range of engine mounting height available using the standard BIA engine mount, you can raise the engine three-holes-up or 2.25-inches higher than mounting in the lowest position. It would be unusual to be able to run the engine much higher than this.

Typically a jack plate also gives some set back, which also helps to permit higher engine mounting heights. What is the set-back distance of the jack plate you bought?

FLDC001--I have a 1984 18 Outrage with a Honda BF150, and I have been running the Honda since 2004. Depending on how much weight you have [aboard the boat], I believe [the maximum boat speed should be] maybe 47 or 48-MPH. I have used a GPS and have registered 48-MPH--seemed like I was flying.

[My 1984 Boston Whaler OUTRAGE 18 does] not have a jack plate; the [static trim of the boat is within] about one inch--more or less--of where it [was] before re-power. The boat batteries are moved forward. The engine is mounted in [described a mounting position that was ambiguous--please use the method of describing engine mounting height in terms of the number of units of "holes" or 0.75-inch the engine mounting height has been raised from the lowest position].

I have not experienced any proposing or concerns about acceleration. Enjoy your boat--Joe

Jackplates and setback increase the propensity for a boat to porpoise.

You should mount the motor without the jack plate and test the performance.
