I'm looking at re-powering my 1988 15' Sport from the old Evinrude 70

I've narrowed down options to:
- Tohatsu 60 (MFS60AETL)
- Yam F70
- Mercury 60 ELPT

I've heard good things about the new Tohatsu's. They are light and more affordable. I know the F70 is the default choice, but they are harder to come by in my area, and about $3000 more expensive. Mercury also seems like a safe bet, but if the performance isn't much different than the Tohatsu, I will choose that.

I mostly use the boat for fishing with 2-3 adults. I also often use it for tubing and even waterskiing. I know I would likely need a lower pitch prop in order to do those things. What would y'all recommend for an engine and what should I expect from each option?

Thank you

The Yamaha F70 has the best power-to-weight ratio @ 253lbs but has the worst availability 9-12 months.

All engines are running 3-5k more due to supply chain problems and demand. Dealers are marking up loose engine in inventory.

If possible I would run the existing engine for the next year, even investing up to 1k to keep it running till you can get an F70. It really is worth it. If that is not an option and I had to make a choice, I would go with the Tohatsu MSF60 at 213 lbs followed by the Yamaha F60 247 lbs.

If you are going to tube with 2-3 in the boat, you will really want the F70.
