I plan to re-power a 1998 Dauntless 13, and plan to chose the new engine from these models and engine weights:
  • Yamaha 40-HP, 213-lbs
  • Suzuki 40-HP, 229-lbs
  • Suzuki 50-HP, 229-lbs
Give me first-hand experience with any of these three engines.

I am still looking for any feedback to help in my decision.

I have no personal experience with the engines you mentioned, however I owned a 1997 Dauntless 13 with a Honda 40-HP for 10 years. The HONDA and DAUNTLESS were a great combination. The top boat speed was 30-MPH under ideal conditions with one 160-lbs adult aboard. The HONDA 40-HP may have weighed about 214-lbs.

Were I to re-power a DAUNTLESS 13 today, I would likely move up to a 50-HP engine as long as the engine weight did not increase much.

I don't think you would go wrong with any of the engines listed, but I would probably choose the Suzuki 50-HP--because I now have a 1988 Outrage 18 with a 2016 Suzuki DF140 and it is a great engine-boat combination.

Re the weight of a 40-HP and 50-HP Suzuki engines: as listed by the OP: the two engines have the same weight. I don't there is any basis for concern about choosing the 50-HP instead of the 40-HP on the basis of engine weight.
