How do remove rust stains from an igloo cooler.
My cooler was stored in a shed with the pool clorine and the SS screws rusted off and have stained the plastic.
What is the best way to remove the stains fron the cooler and the hardware( hinges, handles and latch).
I can replace the hardware if that is easier that removing the stains but I would like to get the stains off the cooler.
Any ideas?

try muriatic acid.

Or if you are a little squeamish about the intensity of muriatic (hydrochloric) acid, use most anything called rust remover with oxalic acid in it. Starbrite makes a bottled product called "Rust Remover", I think the main active ingredient is oxalic acid, and I know it works pretty well.

You may also want to consider replacing all the hardware. west marine sells a kit for all igloo coolers that has all the replacement hardware to make it look like new. $20

Barkeeper's Friend did a good job on my cooler last week.

FSR (Fiberglass Stain Remover), which you can get from West Marine, works great. It's like naval jelly. Put it on, leave for a while, wash off. Makes everything white, so be careful if you use on/around desert tan gel coat.

I'll second Barkeepers Friend.
Contains Oxalic acid, inexpensive, less than $2 at Wal-Mart, and works great..
Steelhead5s' suggestion of replacement hardware is worth considering also.
My 1 & 1/2 cents..

Bar Keepers Friend is very good. Great for polishing metal. Use a very fine steel wool(0000)

Barkeeper's Friend. It's the oxalic acid in it that does the work. It is *MUCH* more effective than muriatic acid.
