We want to put a cooler seat in front of the console on our 1980 Montauk.(older, flat faced console) Here's a reference picture from Joe Kriz's web site: I have nothing but holes in the floor from where one use to be. What I need: Igloo seems to be the best brand for coolers, what size should I be looking for to go with the cushions? I remember hearing that a company called "Halls" makes the cushion sets. How do I get in a hold of them? Where do I get the floor mounts? How do the seat backs mount to the console? Thanks in advance, I know there are a lot of questions here.

Ryan, Cooler is a 94 qt Marine cooler by Igloo. The cushions mount to snaps at the end of the teak parts that the rod holders mount too. You may have to add the snaps if you have never had cusions, available at most fabric stores or probably through Halls.
If you want pictures of the cushions or the snaps let me know, mine are off the boat and in the garage.

The cooler is a 72 quart igloo at least on mine. Any bigger and you may run out of room to walk by it. On my 85 Montauk the "cooler cleats" are just two 3/4" thick varnished mahogany boards with holes drilled through them for the bungee tiedowns that go the the cooler handles. I don't have the official cushion for the cooler, making do with one of the cheap ones from Boater's World for now. I do have the rod cushions, got off ebay. I don't know how "official" they are, but here's a place to get cushions: Walt |

I've found the Coleman "marine" series coolers are much stronger than the Igloo. Seems like they're about $40.00 at K-Mart. |

If you need the floor mounts (cleats), I can make you a pair. Send me an email. Thanks... John Perry |

Just remember, in Joe's 18-Outrage, the cooler cleats surround the cooler; the cooler sits directly on the floor. In a MONTAUK, the cooler sits on top of the cleats. The cleats have a little "lip" in the front to keep the cooler from sliding forward. Another hint, Halls adds the female snap at their shop, and the female snaps do not always line up with the wood mounts for your rod holders (just ask mfrymier). Either have them send the pads without the female snap installed, buy a snap kit at West Marine, and do it yourself, or measure the distance between the center of the upper and lower wood rod holder mounts, and send them this information so they can add the female snaps accordingly. |

Ryan - Don't forget to probe those holes in the floor where your cooler cleats used to be to be sure it is dried out thoroughly. This time of year with the dry air is a good time to make sure it's all dried out, then install the new cleats with epoxy on the screws to seal out any moisture that may get on the deck moving forward. Good luck with your project...sounds like you have as many things on your "to-do" list as I do! Dave |

Ryan, This happens to be one of my winter projects also. The original OEM cooler was a Igloo 86QT. Not available anymore so 94QT Igloo is what is used. If you want your installation to be model/year correct then the cleats were mahoghany. I just purchased a set of teak reproductions that are gorgeous, (cleats are difficult to find. Lois at Halls can set you up with the cooler cushions in the correct upolstery color and piping with back cushions with or without the rod holder option. Mine doesn't have the rod holders, (I don't really want rods & tackle swinging in front of my face besides having 4 other OEM rod holders elsewhere)so I will be ordering the cushion set for the 94 without rodholders. Good Luck. Steve |

Anyone have a picture of the 94QT cooler mounted in a Montauk? I'm not sure what size the one Joe has in his Outrage, but it looks bigger then I want. I'm thinking that 94QT will be to big. |
| kingfish |
Depends on what you mean by, "too big"... I have had a 94 qt front console seat/cooler in our Montauk for three or four years and it works just fine. It is just a little wider than the console but not enough to impede passage in any way. This past year I replaced the original cleats with new longer ones that better accomodate the larger cooler, and everything is copacetic. |

I have a couple of pictures showing the cooler (size unknown) sitting on top of the cleats on what is supposed to be a 1986 Montauk. Post your email address or send it to me and I'll send you the pictures. John |

Does anyone know how the cleats were positioned? If you follow the edge of the non-skid deck, the front of the cleats are not parallel to the cooler. If you make them parallel, the cleats come in on the deck in the rear. |

Ryan - Here is a link to my boat with the new 94 qt and new cushions from Halls. Notice it is mounted with the hinge side forward, opens well. I highly recommend the cushions from Halls. They match the existing RPS cushion to a T. Lois included stainless snaps (both male and female)to install cushion to the cooler. http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/philtyson2002/detail?.dir=fb8a&.dnm=26b4.jpg |

I added a photo of the cleats on my 1986 Montauk. As you can see they follow the floor and are not parallel to the cooler. I can send this in hi-res via email if you need better detail. http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/philtyson2002/detail?.dir=904d&.dnm=8d9f.jpg&.src=ph |

Phil, Have you found the cooler to be to high while sitting sitting on it, or do you think its okay? |
| Phil Tyson |
All my passengers (and I have had alot) have said it is very comfortable. I am 6'2" and love it. |
| Joe Kriz |
John (kingfish) Is the reason for moving the cooler forward and making longer cleats because of the extra 2" height in the 94qt cooler as compared to the 86qt cooler? Phil Tyson, I have seen several people turn the cooler around like yours and it seems to work great. My wife preferred to have the cooler open the regular way as she used to sit on the bow locker in our Montauk with the original 86qt cooler and it was much easier to make sandwiches and get to the food. For the record, the 1976 and 1977 catalogs show as an option for Montauks, In 1978 the catalogs lists as an option for Montauks, The 86qt was the standard option on all Montauks up until Igloo stopped making hte 86qt sometime around 1990 or 1991. The 1992 catalog lists as an option for Montauks, I believe they started using the 72qt because the 94qt was too tall for the Montauk because the cooler sat on top of the cleats in this model and could interfere with the Console Rod Holders if installed. I purchased my 86qt Igloo cooler back in 1975. I owned this cooler long before I purchased my Montauk in 1988 as I knew someday I would own a Montauk. At that time, I used it in my Sport 13. When I purchased my 1985 Outrage 18, it needed a cooler, so I purchased a new 94qt Igloo marine. The difference in size between the 86qt and the 94qt was basically 2 inches in height. Again, for the Record.... Although I much prefer the size of the 86qt/94qt over the 72qt size, I think if I had to replace the cooler in my prior Montauk, I probably would have gone with the 72qt because I had the Console Rod Holders with Cushions and that would have been too tight of a fit for me. The 86qt on a Montauk seemed to be a perfect match. The 94qt on the Outrage 18's also seem to be a perfect match. For What It's Worth. |

Joe- Our Montauk came with a 72 QT cooler in front of the console with cleats matched in size and location for it. Came time to replace the cooler a couple of years ago and it seemed that all there was available was 94 QT; went with it but it is wider, longer and deeper than the 72 QT, the major adverse consequence being that its extra width (front to back) caused the cooler to not be able to rest between the console and the raised blocks on the cleats. So while I was horsing around this past winter with other stuff on the Montauk, I also made new cleats that were designed to give the width (front to back) necessary for the cooler to fit between the raised blocks and the console, plus some extra so the rear-opening lid could clear the back rest when opening. I needed new cleats anyway, but while I didn't have to, I made the new ones longer than the originals rather than just shifting the locations forward so the entire cooler would be supported on them, then drilled the new cleats so I could use the original holes in the deck. Plus I added a couple of additional screws on each side. John |
| kingfish |
p.s. Joe- Re-reading your post a little more carefully, maybe I had an 86 QT cooler, not a 72; I do know the new cooler was bigger in every dimension. John |
| Joe Kriz |
John, Then you must have had the 72qt. because the 86qt and the 94qt are almost identical except for the 2" higher domed lid of the 94qt.. Refresh my memory on what year Montauk you have as I don't see you on the list below.. As I posted above, the 86qt is the original cooler size for the 1978 Montauks up to approximately 1990/1991. I would also like to hear from the people that have the 72qt starting in 1990 and newer as they were the original size in that era. I would like to add these to the list also... Thanks, |
| Joe Kriz |
I would also like to add another note. Some of you may have 72qt coolers in your Montauk that were added by the owner later. Obviously anyone can put any size cooler they prefer in their boat. However, from the Boston Whaler Catalogs and the Options Catalogs, the only optional cooler for the Montauk from 1978 to 1990/1991 was the 86qt. Tom Clark has also made some fine drawings of the Cooler Cleats for the Montauk in both the 86qt original size and for the 94qt replacement cooler which is just a little longer. His drawings are on my drawings page here: 86qt. 94qt. |
| ryanwhaler |
Could I get a 78 QT cooler from Igloo? Seems like a good compromise. |
| kingfish |
Joe- I remember being quite convinced at the time that it was a 72 QT size cooler that I was replacing(?). It almost must have been OEM, whatever it was, because the cleats had never been moved or changed out that I could tell, and the front of the 94 QT cooler had to sit up on top of the raised blocks. I'll send you an email with my version of the updated cleats. Oh, and the Montauk is a 1982 model. It may take some doing to round up the plate number, but I think I have it around somewhere. John |

The reason (discovered this summer) for having the hinges face forward is that when trailering, the cooler CAN NOT open in the wind, allowing light contents (life jackets, documentation, etc) to fly out and litter the highway.

Thanks John. Got your email... Buckda, |

I decided to go with the 72qt cooler. I just ordered the cooler from Igloo's website. I then attempted to order the cooler cushon and backrests from Halls, but they don't have a normal order forum, seems more like an email forum. I told them what I wanted, and I guess I just have to wait for them to get back to me. Those of you who have bought stuff from Halls, what kind of payment methods do they use? |

Joe: I have a 85 Montauk. It has a well weathered 72 quart cooler that came with it when I bought the boat used. Under that are the original wood cleats, which match the cooler exactly. They would be too small for the larger coolers. We thought about putting a larger cooler, but after measuring and working out the foot room decided to stick with the 72, at least for now. Whatever your BW manual says, it sure looks like 72's were on at least some Montauks from BW. What kingfish describes sounds just like mine. Except I know it's a 72. The seating comfort of the cooler is somewhat compromized by the extended grab loop on the console railing. When I sit on it I end up putting a arm through that to be more comfortable. We actually use the cooler as a cooler, and lunch is usually in the bow. Facing the hinges forward would not work for us. One other thing we considered is a cooler seat made by Wise. It's originally designed with a flip-flop backrest, but you can get it without. Tan is one color it comes in, and the cushion is part of it. Inside is a heavily insulated cooler space. The smaller size of this seat could be fitted in front of the console of a Montauk. Walt |
| ryanwhaler |
Your right walt, the 72's must have been on a good amount Montauk after Igloo stoped making the 86. I started fliping threw some of my whaler catalogs late last night all all the newer pre-170 Montauks where listed with the 72qt. |
| Joe Kriz |
Walt & John, Good discussion here and I am enjoying doing research and taxing my memory from the 1980's... First of all, the 72qt was not made in the 1980's that I know of. From the older catalogs and price lists, there were 3 coolers available for the late 1970's boats and all of the 1980's boats as listed in the Whaler catalogs and Price Lists. The 3 sizes available were: I can understand why people did not want to fork out the money for the 86qt cushioned cooler forward seat. In the 1984 Options catalog, this cooler seat listed for $328.00... Ouch.. That was a lot of money for a cooler back in 1984... I know I priced one in 1988 from my local dealer and I remember right around $300.00... I believe that included the cushion and the cleats. I already had the 86qt cooler (although in Red instead of White) so I purchased the cushion for $100.00 and the cleats for around $75 or $95.... These were genuine Whaler parts for the Montauk. Still not cheap. So, my final conclusion is that many people had many different coolers on their Whalers. However, from the sizes listed above, the 86qt was the one that was the factory option for the Montauk. Other people may have used different sizes due to the original cost of these cooler options from Whaler. If anyone has any other concrete information, please let us know. |
| Joe Kriz |
Walt, I missed one of your statement about what the catlaogs say. I have every Main Catalog and Options Catalog since 1980 to present. When I purchased his CD, I sold all the older catalogs that I had prior to 1980 on eBay. There weren't very many and they were spread out through the years so I decided to narrow my collection down to 1980 to present. My interests lie in those years from 1980 onward.. For What It's Worth.... |

Well, I got everything ordered. The 72qt cooler from Igloo should be here with in the next two weeks, they can't send it out this week because they are doing some year-end warehouse thing. I got the check in the mail today for Halls, for the two rod pads and the cooler cushion. I still need the floor mounts. Any suggestions as to where to get them, or who can make me some? |
| jperry54 |
Within the next week or 2, I will be making several pair of cooler cleats for Montauks and Outrages. These will be based on the drawings at http://users.sisqtel.net/jkriz/drawings/drawings.html. If you would like a pair, let me know. These can include the bungee cords and stainless steel screws if needed. I am also planning to make rod holders if you need these. Thanks... John Perry |

I may have some for the 94 qt cooler (17" long) Give me a week to look around. |
