Author Topic:   Strange behavior of 90 E-TEC
erik selis posted 07-03-2006 07:51 AM ET (US)   Profile for erik selis   Send Email to erik selis
We restored a 1984- Montauk a couple of months ago and re-powered it with a 90-hp E-TEC engine. The engine has approximately 50 hours on the hour counter. Recently the engine has been showing some strange behavior. Running at 1,100-RPM it suddenly jumps to 1,400-RPM and vice versa without touching the controls. Once over 1,400-RPM it keeps its rpm and speed constant. Idle rpm are OK, as is WOT and all other rpm's. It just happens between 1100 and 1400 rpm. This is cruising speed for many of the no-wake zones around here.
We took the boat to the BRP dealer and demonstrated this engine behavior but he didn't have an idea what it could be. He also connected his PC and ran the diagnostic software. The were no fault or failure messages. All was working well according to the readout.
Does anybody have an idea what could cause this behavior?

Thanks,

Erik

My 90 etec runs rough when the plugs wear down a bit, and is especially sensitive to worn plugs at low speeds.

Crabby, the first thing the dealer did when we took her in was change the plugs. It didn't help. Actually the engine seems to need some time to run smoothly now at idle, after a cold start since the spark plugs were replaced.

Thanks,

Erik

Erik, you might want to find some flat water, remove the coweling, and watch the throttle cable. If the jump happens without any throttle cable movement, then you know it is a problem with the EMM. If there is any mechanical movement, then you can trace the problem backwards from the engine to the control box.

Just a thought.

Could also be something as simple as a problem with the Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) which tells the EMM how far the throttle is open. Did the dealer check the operation of the TPS at the problem RPM?

I agree with rather and peter. It is either throtle cable slack or a sticking TPS sensor. I know that some TPS sensors have needed little washers under the mounting screws to give them a little clearance. This would make sure the sensor doesn't stick. I do not know if yours would benefit from this.

Thanks guys,

I'll have to wait until the weekend do do any further investigating of the throttle cable movement or TPS sticking as you suggested. I'll call the dealer this evening to see if he checked the TPS while we were out on the water with him. I hope it's a simple solution because the dealer was talking about some drastic measures like total engine replacement.

Between 1100 and 1400 (only) the engine can't make up its mind it seems. It jumps from the one speed to the other. It only started having this problem after 40 hours or so. It sounds like a TPS related problem if you ask me.

I'll keep you all posted.

When the TPS failed on my motor it seemed to fail catastrophically (ie: no prior symptoms that I noticed). When I played with it by removing and then replacing it, it would function for a short period then cause an engine fault code.

If I go out with all the holiday boaters later I'm going to play around at a few different rpm spots and see if I can't make my motor do something similar; I may have just gotten accustomed to the idiosyncracies of this motor over the past 22 months.

Here are some pictures from under the cowling of the 90-HP, E-Tec. You can see the throttle CAM position, the roller and the lever going to the sensor.

http://s25.photobucket.com/albums/c86/erik069/ 1984%20Montauk%20Restoration/?action=view¤t=ThrottleCAM.jpg& refPage=&imgAnch=imgAnch1

Is it possible to see, on these pictures, where a washer should be placed under the TPS mounting screw if the sensor should stick?
I played around with the lever and couldn't feel or see anything out of the ordinary. What I did find a bit surprising was that the lever connecting point allows plenty of room for mis-alignment. This because it is connected via a ball-type hinge. It was very mis-aligned when I looked at it but I doubt that this could have much influence with the problem.

The TPS is much easier to see and deal with if you remove the air intake shroud. The TPS sits on top of the shaft that the throttle butterflies are attached to. On older 90 etec's the TPS is fastened with self tapping screws; on newer motors there is a pair of molded studs that the TPS is placed on and is then secured using a pair of push on clips.

On my older 90 E-TEC I found that it was possible to overtighten the securing screws; I suppose a flat washer could have been used beneath the TPS. On the newer motors there may or may not be a soft rubber gasket beneath the TPS (there is one on the older motors) and I suppose the washer could go on the stud prior to placing the TPS on the motor.

If you need pics I can go out later once the downpours stop and snap a few for you, but it should be pretty evident once you remove the air intake shroud.

Well today it has been 9 days since the boat has been at the dealer, where the engine was purchased and also installed. There is no indication that they have done any work in finding out what is wrong with the engine. IMO nothing has been done and they cannot give you any straight answers to any questions you ask. Very disappointing indeed. When the question was asked: "what's next?" the answer is "we'll call you in a week". Not a very reassuring answer if you ask me, especially when you're in the middle of your summer holidays and the weather is perfect...

I get the impression that the problem described in my first post of this topic, isn't the only thread where the same problem floats to the surface.

http://continuouswave.com/ubb/Forum4/HTML/003720.html

In this thread Harv states the following:

quote:
Well I installed the 13 pitch prop yesterday and got 5500 RPM. the stutter remains between 3800 and 4200 RPM
If i nudge the throttle forward at 4200 it runs up to 4800 on its own.

and Alex K says this:

quote:
My new engine runs smooth in all RPM now and I can cruise at the desired RPM's without the engine revving up or down on its own.

The first 40 hours of engine use showed no signs of any problem. We have a 17-inch standard aluminium prop on the engine at the moment. Would changing the prop have any influence? i.e. a 15-inch pitch?

Does anyone know what the latest software version is for the E-Tec 90?

I hope the dealer can solve the problem. I fear however, that he doesn't have a clue how to himself. He will need factory assistance and who knows how long that will take. This is exactly what I feared for before recommending the purchase of this engine.

Just for the record:

It has been 6 days since the boat has been at the dealer. (not 9)
I also still think the E-Tec is an amazing engine. I'm a bit dissapointed with the dealer and how he's handeling the problem.

I have asked two dealers in France for a new 225 e-tec for repowering. Only one responding (via e-mail)...
Does this people really want to do their job ?
If this can help, call Michel at BRP France : cell #+33 6 20 52 22 34.
He is a professionnal and really knows (I think) this motors.
Hope this can help

Hi Erik,
I had the boat out on friday waterskiing with 2 friends, I changed from the 14x19 prop to 14x17 before we started. It was OK to pull a skier up on plane, BUT it was not possible to keep a constant speed again. We weren't out very long and unfortunately I don't remember the exact RPM's because I was busy checking the speed on my GPS. From about 30 km/h (19MPH) we tried to speed up slowly, it was not possible, with just so much more throttle that the engine would respond, it reved up and speed went above 45 km/h (28MPH). I thought this problem was solved, at least with my engine. Obviously it's not. I had the engine read out on saturday, it has 16 hours now and the read-out shows no problems or faults, the run-in period is complete, its set to XD100 and according to my dealer there's no update available.
What can we do?
Alex

Seahorse, you have been a great help to everyone here and the forum. Thank you very much.

Alex, sorry to hear that you are still having the problem with you engine. That totally sucks after all the trouble you have been through. What we will be doing, for the time being, is wait until the dealer here has contacted the factory and sent a specialist. It's the only thing we can do at the moment. I know quite a few fishermen in Holland who have E-Tec engines and will be asking them if the have also encountered this problem before. I'll also be asking for advice on capable and honest dealerships in Holland. I can totally understand that a dealer can have trouble finding a problem with a new, sophisticated engine. What we can't except is that a dealer is not honest and wont communicate with you about the problem.

Is there more to the story about your motor, its history, or a problem with the dealer?

The latest update for a software revision was Jan. 2006.

Hi Seahorse,
most of the story is here and its a long story about 2 engines already:
http://continuouswave.com/ubb/Forum4/HTML/003720.html
The service manager of BRP in Germany says there's an update that will solve all my problems, but all this guy told me so far was blabla (I have to deal with him for 18 months now). The new engine runs OK but not perfect, far better than the first I got, but pulling a skier is a mess.

Alex,

When you talk to the repair folks, make sure they install the latest software dated Jan. 2006, that they test the engine thermostat and pressure relief valve to make sure it warms up to 158°F (70°C), and that the exhaust-tuning water valve is inspected and tested per the service manual.

The dealer called on friday evening and told us we could pick up the boat on saturday morning. He said the problem was caused by a wire that had been painted during the production of the engine. This wire was making a bad contact...? I don't know which wire it was as I didn't speak to him myself. Eddy, the new boatowner, will be taking her out this afternoon and I will ask him how it went. I'll also report back here when I have some more info.

Erik

erik selis posted 07-24-2006 02:10 AM ET (US)     Profile for erik selis  Send Email to erik selis
The engine seems to be fixed and runs like a champ again. I still have no idea what exactly the problem was other than a painted wire causing a bad contact somewhere. When Eddy asked the dealer how he solved the problem the dealer said that he got a hint from his contacts at the factory in the USA. Apparently they have been confronted with this problem before.
I know the info about the solution seems rather fuzzy and to satisfy my own curiosity, I will ask the dealer more detailed info next time I'm there. (if he's willing to share it). I will also keep you all posted here. The main thing at the moment is that the engine is back to normal and in an acceptable timeframe.

Hi Seahorse,
I talked to the BRP service guy (BRP representant, not a mechanic), he said the info you gave me about testing the engine thermostat and pressure relief valve was important for the last year model that I first had, but why did they give a new engine to me then? The exhaust-tuning water valve can be tested with the diagnose software with the push of a button he said. And he said there were several updates since January... So everything is good, isn't it? I think I'll get the update tomorrow. I'll keep you informed.

Well the 90 E-TEC has about 140 hours of use now and the problems we have, as explained in the original post, are still very much present. In fact it has gotten worse at times. It now hesitates at random RPM ranges.

Changing the spark plugs helps....for something like 10 hours. I know we run the engine at slow speeds a lot (for trolling) but 10 hours is unacceptable.

At times, especially if the engine has been shut down for a while, it will hardly react to the throttle position when getting underway. It will hesitate as if you try to go WOT and then go immediately go to idle. The only thing you then can do is idle back to the ramp. NO ALARMS ARE INDICATED.

The dealer hasn't got a clue of what's going on and he has told us so much BS that he has lost all his credibility. Nevertheless this engine still has more than 2 years of warranty. Something will have to be done.

There must be a reason why these spark plugs are fouled as fast as they do? Maybe the engine doesn't heat up enough? I don't think it's dirty fuel because we have installed a fuel filter/water separator recently and the problems are still there.

Any suggestions are welcome. I really hope this engine starts getting more reliable.

Sorry about your troubles. Do you have a printout of the profile (performance report)?

That will tell you about the temperature profile.

Still sounds like a bad TPS to me. In another thread regarding the E-TEC 90, Seahorse suggested the following:

quote:
On the earlier inline motors where the TPS is held on by screws, sometimes there is a tolerance stackup that can cause a binding condition, and most of the time, you cannot even feel it. The trick is to install a thin #10 flat washer under the TPS at each screw hole to raise it slightly.
Take the motor to your dealer, or if he does dock calls with the latest software have him update the EMM to the 2007 calibration and allow for a new adjustment for the amount of TPS % before the throttle plates start to open.

Has this been done?

Erik,

I think you are getting good help here but correct me if I am wrong: if you have a near new E-Tec with two years left on the warranty, isn't it the dealer's and the manufacturer's responsibility to fix your motor and make it run properly?

I hope somebody at BRP is reading this. They need to step up to the plate and fulfill their obligations.

erik selis posted 10-24-2006 12:12 PM ET (US)     Profile for erik selis  Send Email to erik selis
Peter, yes the TPS has been checked. Just as Seahorse has explained before. The TPS on this engine is mounted in a different way than the first models. This is a 2006, 90 E-TEC. I took some pictures that I posted in this thread a while ago although the TPS is difficult to see in them.
Dave, we don't have the performance report. I will ask for it next time the boat gets to the dealer (which will be not too long from now).
Tom, I totally agree with you. It is the dealers responsibility. The thing is that the dealer in not competent with these E-TEC engines. He should be but he is not. He has lied so much this past year it's hard to know if he's telling the truth about anything. In fact, he's never around to ask him anything anymore. Nobody's allowed in the work shop. The only people you get to deal with are the people at the reception of the shop. You never get him on the phone...it's a sad story really. The big problem now is finding a dealer that want's to help find and fix the problem. It's a small world in this business and not all BRP dealers are close by.
The more information we can get as to what the cause of the problem could be the more information we can pass along to the dealer or a new dealer that wants to help.

Thanks everyone.

Boy, that really tics me off. An incompetent dealer, that just walks away from warranty work. You`ll have to find another dealer. You can`t force competence on people, but I sure would complain. If they have better business bureau in Belgium, I would register a complaint with them and also with BRP in the USA. They need a lemon law for outboard, like they have for automobiles.

OK. Unfortunately not all dealers are created equal and dealers are the primary contact with customers and can really make or break the experience.

One other thought comes from the comment regarding suspected cold operation -- has the thermostat been checked for debris and proper operation? Should be something fairly simple to check.

And yet one more thought is that one or more of the sensors (ambient air temp, water temp, ambient pressure, etc.) that the EMM relies on to make its determination of what to do is not functioning properly. I think that the various sensor outputs can be seen with the technician's diagnostic software.

Erik, I'm sorry to hear about your problems with the engine and the dealer. I will be visiting my dealer/mechanic this week, and I will run it by him. We usually shoot the breeze for a while before I take off, and I'll use some of that time to discuss it with him. I hope it helps. In the mean time, you should call BRP and ask for another qualified service mechanic in the area, if the is even possible. Perhaps BRP could contact the new QSM prior to your initial contact, and help fortify the relationship.

Thanks everyone for your input. I really appreciate it.
Rob, that would be great if you could ask your mechanic for his opinion.
As I said before, after installing new spark plugs the engine runs as it should. Something like 10 engine hours later you start feeling the hesitation at times and then it gradually deteriorates. To the point where the engine will only run at idle.
Peter, if something would be wrong with the sensors wouldn't you get some kind of failure message (indication)?
I agree with the thought of the engine not heating up as it should. The problem is that I am very hesitant of messing around with it myself. Even though it may be a simple task, the way the relationship with this dealer is heading I don't want to give him the opportunity blaming anything on us.
I am logging all of the info I can get here and elsewhere and will present this to someone who is authorized and capable of fixing the problem.

Thanks again,

If it is the temperature / thermostat setting, ask the dealer to apply a bit of gasket glue to the gasket. The factory does not take this step. I'd the gasket isn't seated properly then the thermostat won't be able to work optimally.

Just another thought for your list.

You would think the Check Engine light would be lit if a sensor is out of range but I wouldn't rule it out.

When you pulled the old plugs out, what did they look like? What was the gap? Was the center electrode worn down to the insulator? I have read that excessive erosion on the E-TEC sparkplug can indicate that the motor is not coming up to proper operating temperature.

I'll bet BRP and it's ContinuousWave consumer repair internet lobbists are wishing the engine actually *HAD* been hit by lightning!
And all along, from the "Verado Lightning" thread, I was thinking it was Mercury (guilty 'til proven innocent), not BRP, who didn't take care of it's customers.

Erik, for being a "certified BRP field tester", you should get a free case of XD100 oil!

Seriously, Erik, I hope you get it fixed soon, since something like this will only enhance the notion that US built products are no good, and end up in Japanese engine sales. Have you considered "cutting bait" and switching to a 90 Optimax? Time on the water is too valuable

Nick,

I understand Erik is in Belguim. I've shipped hardware over to him for the Montauk and received Belguim chocolates in return!

I agree not all dealers are created equal. I stated the obvious to show my empathy with Erik and Eddy. If I were in their shoes I think I would be ticked.

I don't care whose "team" we are talking about, I believe in customer service and I think a manufacturer needs to take care of their products. We know BRP has done this for others, let's see them take care of a Belguim E-Tec 90 belonging to friends of mine.

Despite larry, I think you should involve BRP. I have been in contack with an Aussie about a tweak for his E-TEC and once the factory got involved problem was solved. And right quick. No questions or hesitations.

One can only hope that all mfgrs would be so very responsive even when the dealer is not living up to the expectations. Eventually the attitude will trickle down to all dealers.

Why not manufacture and ship a Lemon-free product in the first place, and spare the dealership this headache, reputation damage, ContinuousWave bashing, and loss of future customers?

Larry -

You are often right

Except for the times when you begin your post with "Do I have this right?" Or "Let me get this straight."

It is at that point when whatever flows from your fingers onto the keyboard is most often mistaken at the best or twisted to be misleading at the worst.

My observations lately.

I generally expected better, but remain sadly disappointed.

First, you are comparing a negative interaction with a mfgr rep to a negative interaction with an independent dealer. In the case you refer to, the local dealer stepped to the plate to play the role of hero, saving a customer for the mfgr. In this case, we have not had an interaction with the mfgr yet.

If past performance is indicative, then BRP has recently handily trounced Merc in that regard. It seems that rising to the competition makes one sharper than having the vast majority of your business handed to you. Hundreds of American companies have learned that lesson over the years.

Those who fail to learn the lessons of history are doomed to repeat them

Cheers

Thanks for the link Steve. It looks like Seahorse is a regular there.
Peter, I'll be replacing the spark plugs on Saturday and will place some pictures here so you can see for yourself. Yes they were corroded badly last time. I thought it could have been caused by small amounts of water mixed in the fuel. The reason we put in the water separator. (The Montauk has a 80 liter stainless steel tank).
As soon as we get the chance we will ask for the printout of the engine data. Let's hope he wants to give it to us or he doesn't forget...
Larry, I don't think I could be called a BRP field tester because these engines were out at least 2 years before we decided on this engine for this classic Montauk. The only thing disappointing from this choice of engine is the experience with the dealer as he should have solved the problem when we took her in after 50 hours of use. I'm quite sure he didn't take the necessary action solving the problem then and certainly not now. He has just been avoiding us now. That is frustrating. As Peter mentioned: the dealer makes or breaks the experience. I also believe that all manufacturers will support their customers as best they can. Be it Mercury, BRP, Honda, Yamaha ... All engines these days are good engines IMO. In this case, with the classic Montauk hull, the 90 E-TEC is the best suited engine for this hull. There is IMO no doubt about that. It's all about weight for us and of course the power/weight ratio. I am totally unbiased when it comes to engines. I own a 90, 2-stroke Merc and love this engine although she smokes and drinks a lot. I have owned Suzuki's and they were fantastic engines (and still are). Two of my best fishing buddies both have Mercury engines on their boats. One has a 150 Optimax (2005) and the other has a 60-Hp EFI 4-stroke (2001?). Both are pleased with their engines. Both have also had their problems but they were solved by an honest and competent dealer. That's what it's all about. Trust and credibility.
You also ask if I would be willing to switch to the 90 Optimax? In this case I wouldn't because of the weight issue I mentioned. If it were for my 170 Montauk I would consider it because I have a super Mercury dealer close by. I would also consider a 115-E-Tec but I would definitely buy it at a different dealership. If I were to choose between equally priced, equally serviced, American engines and Japanese engines I would choose American. Why ? well there's nothing wrong with the Japanese engines yet I still feel much closer related to my American brothers. At least that's my personal feeling on that.
Thanks once again for your time guys. I'll keep you posted.

Erik -- Looking forward to seeing what the plugs look like, if for no other reason than to compare them to what my Ficht plugs look like. My undertanding is that the plugs should last for 300 hours and are a warranty item so you shouldn't have to pay for a set of plugs. If erroded (corroded?) severely in a short time, something in the system isn't right.

My experience with the Ficht DFI system is that spark plug gap is important for optimum smooth operation. I'm sure that is also the case on the E-TEC. On the Ficht 225s that I have, the gap specification is 0.028 inch (~0.7mm) and when the gap erodes to approximately 0.045 inch (~1.1 mm) the motors do not run quite as smoothly although they still run.

When I first got my motors (used), I didn't know to check for the spark plugs gap increase caused by electrode erosion. I was having a stalling problem on one of them. The motor would start OK when the ambient temperature was warm but when the ambient temperature was cold out it would not start. I ultimately pulled the plugs to take a look for fouling and found that the center electrode had been eroded right down to the insulator, there was no electrode sticking out beyond the insulator. What amazed me was that with a gap of something like 0.100 inch (2.54 mm), 3 times what is called for in the specification, the motor would still run if I could get it started although it would stall at idle without any warning making for some interesting docking manuevers.

I'm sure you know this but when you replace the plugs, make sure that the gap is set to specification and that you have them indexed so that the J electrode is not pointing towards the injector so as to block the injected fuel stream. Ideally, the point on the circle 180 degrees opposite of the J electrode attachment point on the plug should be pointed right at the injector but 90 degrees to either side of that should be OK.

Here are some pictures I took when replacing the spark plugs this afternoon.

The first 2 pictures are of the plugs from the bottom cylinder.

http://tinyurl.com/yn3jsm

http://tinyurl.com/ynz6a6

The other pictures are the top plugs. The plugs in the middle looked the same as the top ones.

http://tinyurl.com/yajz3d

http://tinyurl.com/ymwydr

These plugs have 40 hours of use now and you could feel that something was wrong after 10 hours or so.

There is quite a bit of difference between the bottom spark plug and the other 2. The anode on the bottom plug looks like it's almost worn out right down to the top of the isolator. Could there be something wrong with the injector of the bottom cylinder?

Erik

Peter posted 10-28-2006 06:55 PM ET (US)     Profile for Peter  Send Email to Peter
On my 225 Fichts, whenever I pull the plugs, either to replace or regap, I check the gap and all 12 plugs usually have the same amount of wear 0.010 to 0.15 inch, basically +/- 0.0025 inch of each other, after about 50 hours. It looks like the spread between the top and bottom plug in your case is much greater than 0.0025 inch.

Something different is going on in the bottom cylinder. I see the index marking on the insulator so I assume that they've been indexed. How did the indexing compare from cylinder to cylinder? More specifically, was the bottom cylinder further away from being "perfectly indexed" (perfectly indexed = 0 degree offset)? Do you use a torque wrench to do the indexing?

Those plugs look like the engine is running REALLY rich, esp.
on the bottom cylinders. The right color is just a little
darker than desert tan. These plugs look fluffy sooty black
and could be used as a text book example of a too rich engine.

Bottom 1 is horribly eroded. 40 hours would be 2400 miles in
a car at 60 MPH. Does this motor have separate power packs?
If so, swap them. If there's a power pack per cylinder,
swap bottom 1 and top 2. If there a power pack per pair,
swap the power packs. See if the bug moves.

Chuck -- Conventional spark plug color reading wisdom for carbureted 2-strokes does not apply to DFI 2-strokes. A dry black sooty appearance on the plugs with a little more soot on one side than the other is normal. Other than the excess erosion on the bottom plug, they look just like the plugs out of my Ficht 225s.

Peter,

The plugs I removed were installed by the dealer. The index on these plugs were in line with the gap. They were all 0 degrees ofset. The bottom plug was tightened tighter than the other two.

I indexed the new plugs in the same way. I also used a torque wrench. For the top 2 plugs I used 20 Nm (15 ft-lb) torque. They have approx 80° positive offset from the injector. The bottom plug needed 30Nm (22ft-lb) torque to get a 60° negative offset. Not perfect but within the specifications.

I also had to swap the plugs from one cylinder to the other to get this acceptable arrangement.

It's clear that if you want a 0° offset you have to be very flexible with the torque and play around with many sparkplugs to find the best suited thread entrance.

Thanks,

Erik

Hi Erik,
I talked to the sales manager of BRP Europe in Belgium a few weeks ago because I'm still having problems with my 60HP E-TEC. He told me he took a ride with 2 fishermen from Belgium in a classic Boston Whaler with exactly the problems you describe. He then told me all problems were solved. Has that been you and your friend?

Hi Alex,

Thanks for your input. I don't think the sales manager for BRP Europe is talking about us. He's located in a different part of Belgium and I have never met him before. He may be aware of out case via the dealer we go to. It would be nice to know however how he solved the problem on the boat he was talking about. You know, after changing the spark plugs the problem is temporarily solved. It's after something like 10 hours that the problem gradually builds up.

I sent the pictures of the spark plugs via e-mail to the dealer and he gave us a phone call. He also said that it isn't normal that the bottom spark plug is eroded as badly as it is. He promised to send me the data from this engine via e-mail. I haven't received it yet but he told me he would be out of town for a few days for a sales meeting. As soon as I get it I will post it here. He also said he has ordered a new injector for the bottom piston. Let's hope it works. I don't know why but his tone of voice was different when I spoke to him. He seemed more willing to help out and get the problem solved. Maybe more people lurk around here than we all think.

Que Mission Impossible Music:

Good evening agent LHG.

Six years ago, the French-Canadian government, with the cooperation of French-Canadian corporations and Quebecois separatists, began training an elite band of computer operatives in a dark riverside warehouse outside of Montreal. Their mission: to infiltrate American-based Web sites and covertly denounce American brands in preparation of the upcoming release of a new technology exploited by a major French-Canadian company. This technology, also used for the nefarious purposes of the German automakers, would call into question assumptions made by American and Japanese-owned engine makers, and might expose certain engine makers to considerable financial pressures based on multi-million dollar technology development programs.

Specifically, these special e-forces were trained to simultaneously cover-up any possible bad news about technology used by French-Canadian companies, while playing down the technologies of American and Japanese-owned engine makers.

We are changing your original mission to spread seeds of doubt and discontent about Yamaha motors and the illegal practices of that company in the United States. Your new mission, should you choose to accept it, is to hunt down and expose these French-Canadian e-agents in online boating communities and chat rooms across the internet.

Be especially careful in chat rooms where the moderators may have any Canadian connections, for these e-fluential people could be compromised. Specifically if they have a French-sounding last name. Or if they have a silent consonant in their name. Yeah, those sneaky bastards are the worst – even their name is hiding things from you!

We realize that you have built up a considerable amount of goodwill capital on certain sites, and regret that you may have to begin spending that capital – but your mission is of the utmost importance. You can not fail. You MUST expose these agents and their plot to take over the world with their technology and to ruin our goal of complete single-brand transom ownership on all “good” brands of boats, including your much loved Boston Whalers.

Additional agents will be working with you, covertly of course, to overcome the powers of these French-Canadian e-forces. You will recognize “friendlies” through the exchange of secret code words and phrases, such as “With black in back, you lead the pack,” and “Go with Black or Run in Back.”

Please meet at the rendezvous point for additional instructions. That is all.

End music.

Tongue in cheek, but hey – lighten up Larry, I AM starting to wonder. I swear, if I see you talking into you shoe I’m calling the CW police!

Just got back home from a 3 day fishing trip. It gave me quite a laugh reading Dave's Mission Impossible scenario.
Larry's a nice guy and I find it quite entertaining to see how he defends his love (interests?) for Mercury engines.

We were out with the Classic Montauk with the 90 E-Tec. As you know I just replaced the spark plugs. It didn't give us too much trouble. Just at the end of the first day. After almost 7 hours of constant trolling, the engine hesitated while getting on plane and going to WOT. After a few minutes we didn't feel any more hesitation. The second and third day we didn't troll much and did a lot of drift fishing with dead baits. The engine didn't hesitate once when we ran it. It doesn't seem to like long, extensive periods of slow running.

I haven't received the engine data from the dealer yet. Maybe he'll send it next week.

I think that you're having a temperature control problem. Either the thermostat or the emm have to be adjusted to get the engine warmer. 20 degrees farenheit can make a huge difference if the emm thinks the motor is still warming up. Your engine history report will tell for sure.

In the interest of complete candor and full disclosure, I must mention that many years ago I purchased a Renault Alliance. At that time the brand was being sold by AMC, prior to their takeover by Chrysler. I had a good friend who worked for AMC, and he hooked me up with an insider deal on a very slightly used corporate vehicle. (In Detroit there are all kinds of such insider deals available--almost no one actually buys a car at retail around here.) The Renault Alliance had a 5-speed manual transmission, a leather interior, and a fantastic JBL Premium Sound System. It was very fun to drive, and it got excellent gas mileage, which, at the time, was especially important due to the rising cost of fuel. The fundamental reason the car got such good fuel economy was its light weight, and some of its components were indeed rather light in their construction, necessitating replacement somewhat more often than one would like. I drove the car for several years, and it ran well for me. I sold it to a friend who drove it for several years afterwards, eventually passing it one to one of his children. In that same era, domestic cars which provided the same degree of fuel economy where rather clownish and cumbrous little vehicles, and I doubt anyone who owned or drove one could even remember it, let alone have something good to say about them.

Renault's market share in North America has been declining, and I don't think they really make much of an effort to sell their product here anymore.

Bombardier's manufacturing roots lie in high-speed rail and advanced commercial passenger jet aircraft. I realize there is no comparison in the degree of engineering or design needed to manufacture a commercial passenger jet as compared to something really high-tech like a bowling alley or a pool table.

As far as I know, there is no connection between Bombardier and Renault.

Actually, Bombardier's manufacturing roots date back to the period from 1937 to 1942 and lie in the development of "tracked vehicles for traveling over the snow," which have come to be known as snowmobiles. The jet thing came much later.

While most all of us appreciate the humorous comparison of engineering requirements between a bowling alley and a jet, the most likely interaction between such diverse corporate divisions (i.e. an outboard engine and a jet, or an outboard engine and a bowling alley) is probably most likely to be the division VP's having dinner together during a corporate level meeting at headquarters. Although I do admit, those black engines sure have a beautiful waxy shine to them don't they...

Mercury dominated all parts of the marine industry BEFORE being bought by a bowling ball company.

OMC went bankrupt before being bought by an airplane company.

Outboards don't fly.

How many Merc powered brand new Boston Whalers were sold in the 2006 model year? Being more of a Scream and Fly type boater, don't really know, but would guess maybe 3500 boats. This means maybe 4000 Merc engines went out on them?

Except for the guy who tried to stick it to Mercury with the Verado lightning episode, complaints on this Whaler oriented website from these 4000 new 2006 Merc-Whaler owners about Opti, Verado or 4-stroke EFI problems have been about zero from what I can tell.

Regarding these old Whalers that you guys love so much, the overtone on this website is that E-Tec is the engine of choice, and where the votes are going, equipped with Merc props of course to snap up their performance. Actually, it's not, and a lot of loose Opti's and 4-strokes are bought, all brands. It's just these buyers don't have problems, nor a need to post inferiority complex about their puchase. But going with the spin, it seems that maybe 10 old Whalers here have been re-powered with Evinrudes, and at least half of them seem to have blown up or needed other major pain-in-the-butt work, destroying the owner's confidence in long term reliability and boating fun. Or maybe it's just the E-tec buyers are born complainers about problems and top speed?

So using these numbers and information on CW, it appears that an Evinrude buyer has a 400 times greater chance of problems than a Merc buyer would have. That is what I would call a real 'Rude Awakening. Since we do not see the complaints from Yamaha, Honda and Suzuki 4-stroke repowers here either, the same risk factors may apply there.

So keep ordering up those E-Tecs for your old boats, but don't take off your rose colored glasses and keep your fingers crossed.

Seems like we have a Mercury Outboard Defense Squad. With this large Mercury Outboard Defense Squad now established, maybe jimh can set up a a whole new Area of concentration:

ContinuousWave: Mercury Outboard Defense
Concentrating on Defending the Mercury Outboard since 2000

The MOD SQUAD! Solid. It's not that Mercury owners don't have problems, they just don't "fink" on their Mercury outboards. Good one Barney. LOL.

Readers here have got to love it. A well informed Mercury Optimax XS/ProXS expert shows up here, and he gets labled as "Evinrude's Worst Person in the World", little ol' Me!

Didn't this happen to Glen E of the Verado Club also?

This gives new meaning to the term "E-TEC test dummies".

What makes it worse is, my favorite boat, and the two I use the most, are a 26 twin Whaler and a 21 single Whaler.

XS - Nice to have you dropping in behind "enemy lines"!

Buckda posted 11-09-2006 07:18 PM ET (US)     Profile for Buckda  Send Email to Buckda
Larry -

Do you define "enemy lines" to mean any thread that is discussing E-TEC? Since you don't have anything productive to add to this discussion, I assume you still see yourself as being on some sort of "covert" mission behind "enemy lines" to disrupt things.

Perhaps you consider CW as enemy territory, now that it has been overrun or otherwise compromised by BRP agents hell-bent on ruining the world.

It must represent some kind of "professional" challenge for you to claim to be an upstanding member of this site - on one hand condemning those who you are convinced have come here to ruin and destroy the site, - all the while doing your damn best to do just that yourself. In your zeal, you have become what you despise.

Where is the helpful and knowledgable LHG we all respected and admired so recently?

I'm starting to wonder what you have on JimH, he let's you pop into random threads and drop unfounded claims and inciteful comments with reckless abandon and the zeal of a fraternity boy.

You must have had a loooong summer with no boating.

Don't worry, I winterized my motors last weekend, but it's so easy to do it again (automatically), I'm happy to bring my 18 over to the lakefront on Saturday so you can get your fix. Haven't seen you on the water all year. Some of that fresh Lake Michigan air might do you good.

Quote from Buckda "Where is the helpful and knowledgable LHG we all respected and admired so recently?"
I like the "helpful" Larry. But this stuff does get out of hand and doesn't help wether you own a Mercury or an Evinrude.
LHG posted 11-09-2006 11:09 PM ET (US)     Profile for LHG
Buckda - After your latest round of personal attacks, you won't be seeing me on the water next year, either. And I think you own JimH an apology for such a stupid remark.

A few others in the thread might owe XS an apology for accusing him of being me, too.

As for Peter's thread title idea, I don't think it's necessary at all - this is just something Boating website participants all over have come to expect of Fourdfish.

Hey Erik, did you ever get that problem fixed? I know you can`t get a word in edgewise on your own thread, and if you could it doesn`t seem anyone's` listening anymore. Your probably sitting at your computer and reading what these crazy Americans are writing, and thinking, no wonder America can`t get along with the rest of the world, they can`t even get along with themselves.
Your too polite. I`d tell them to kiss off, start their own thread, your trying to solve a problem.

If I have some time this weekend I will try to separate the thread into two parts: the initial discussion about the E-TEC 90 and the bar fight.

I did enjoy Peter's proposed revision for the TOPIC ("Strange Behavior of CW Member"). There was a delightful ambiguity in the wording.

Buckda posted 11-10-2006 02:47 AM ET (US)     Profile for Buckda  Send Email to Buckda
As an "E-TEC test dummy," it was only a matter of time I guess.

I already had a conversation with JimH about this thread. I'll ask him the next time I speak to him to find out if I owe him an apology. If I do, then he'll get one post haste.

I'd put down my cue stick and get back to the game and my beer if it didn't keep getting interrupted by people insulting me and at least 9 other folks here who have decided to purchase an obviously flawed and inferior product. I let it slide for a few rounds and even tried to steer the discussion back but I guess the repitition on this and other threads got my goat.

This thread after all was started as an ETEC thread about the problem erik was having with his engine. Larry as usual came in and hyjacked the thread and started this bar fight with a commercial (his usual mine is better than yours)!
If anyone owes an apology, it is Larry for again interfearing in a thread just to put down people who have made a choice to purchase a product which he hates.
Dave--You won't be missing anything by not seeing him.
I hope Jim edits the thread but that won't stop Larry and friends from trying to interfear in future ETEC threads to sell his product.

Even though we prefer different colored outboards, he is a fellow professional who is well versed in his field. I read every one of his contributions here and on other forums and respect his knowledgable posts.

Hi guys,

I've been out of the country for work these past 4 days and have been able to follow this thread but haven't had the time to reply yet.

Let me first of all thank Jimh for not throwing this thread in the trash can yet. I think the original thread concerning the 90, E-TEC problem is a valuable thread and has helped me out in analyzing the situation. We are getting closer and closer to solving the problem and I'm sure we will eventually find and fix the reason for these pre-worn-out spark plugs. This thread may also be able to help out other E-Tec owners that have the same problem now or in the future. Many thanks to the people here for their much appreciated advice and input.

I am also a bit surprised and disappointed by Larry's remarks. I'm not going to take it personally but I find the expression "E-Tec test dummies" a bit over the line really.
I have always had the highest respect for his opinion and the knowledge he has concerning Whalers, Mercurys, props... and keeping them in top shape. It's like Jimh always says: you are what you write...To me it looks like he's having pleasure in the fact the we're having problems with our E-tec engine. An engine which cost us 11.000 Euro (13750 USD) that was built in the USA. It doesn't make sense for Larry to be laughing at me as an European "E-Tec test dummy" when in fact this money helps provide jobs in the USA.

I have had enough of this bunch around here, and I'm sure the feeling is mutual, which is OK by me, so read carefully. This is all I'm going to say, so read carefully.

1. Returning after 10 months was clearly a mistake, and I won't make it again - see below. I failed to learn the lesson others have been more successful in doing.

2. The public remark about some kind of collusion, blackmail or corruption between Jim and I was the end of the line for me around here. Just plain stupid and ignorant, and clearly without regret. Jim has probably deleted more of my posts than anybody's, except perhaps Whalerguy and the political nuts.

3. The test dummie remark was for the person who isn't even bright enough to figure out that "lhg" and "LHG" are the same person,(duh) and who stalks me constantly with other assorted stupid remarks, even when I'm not around. If this person is your representative, be my guest, and be prepared for the fallout from others, too. I went to caps because some earlier people here, since successfully departed, were calling me "ihg". I'm surprised the rest of you don't read well enough to figure it out. But if the rest of you are so concerned that test dummies was meant for E-tec buyers in general, take my word that it was not, and I apologize for my poor composition. Field testers or test subjects is a criticism on the management of the BRP Company, not you personally, like the 1998-2001 Optimax attacks were on Mercury management. Furthermore, I didn't invent the field tester concept nor produce the engine, nor sugg1est you buy them. Or do they, alone, but certainly not Mercury, get a pass for putting out "troublesome" engines. That's what a lot around here think. Mercury certainly got bombed for it here. If so, also be my guest and see the world your biased way.

4. It's fairly common talk over the web for people who have bought troubled new outboards since 1998 when the first DFI's appreared, to often say they were tired of being the Company's field testers. I can think of Evinrude Ficht first, then Mercury Optimax, then Yamaha HPDI, and now again, Evinrude E-tec. All DFI's, incidentally. Hello again. Jurisprudence and Trafficlawyer come to mind with early Opti problems and bashing. Buyers of all FOUR of these brands have rightfully complained about being stuck with product not really ready for release, bad judgement on the part of ALL of these companies, considering the hard earned money that people spent on them. So as far as I am concerned, what's good enough for Ficht, Optimax, and HPDI owners to take, is good enough for the infomercialed E-tec and it's attack on Yamaha F150 and F225, and implied stupidity of those people who would buy them. One does get tired of this E-tec superiority propaganda, which it clearly is not.

So that's what I think, and I don't care whether you guys like it or not. I'm just plain tired of boating websites.

Incidentally, my password is the highly original "WHALER", so if anybody wants to be me, have fun. Try it, you'll like it.

All outboard mfgs. have had their problem motors I remember when the infamous (famous to Larry) Black Max came out. Several members of our Cape Coral Tarpon Club bought them, and they blew powerheads with regularity. those of us that had the inline sixes, didn`t take pity on the black Max owners when they lost valuable tournament fishing days. When I saw the pic.Larry`s black Max I cringed, even though it was pretty. Back in the eighties there was a saying going around because of the Merc V6s, and I hope I don`t get in trouble for this, and I mean no prejudice, but the saying was, " I never knew anything that was black and worked"

I guess I have not been doing my job very well:
