Outrage 25 Cuddy Sterndrive with Hardtop

Postby Rubysdad » Thu Dec 29, 2022 8:59 pm

[I own an unspecified model year] Outrage 25 Cuddy with a Hardtop and powered with a Volvo D4 sterndrive. I have not seen another boat like this one. I love this boat. The OUTRAGE 25 CUDDY boat rides like a dream and rides differently than any of my five previous Boston Whaler boats.

In the 2022 boating season the steering actuator cylinders were replaced. Now I am re-wiring the boat and installing new electronic for 2023.

According to the reference matrix, the Outrage 25 Cuddy sterndrive was only in production in 1986.

As for the hardtop, I have a suspicion it is aftermarket.

We would appreciate you sharing photos of the restoration, before, during and after.

I don't recall any mention of any OUTRAGE 25 CUDDY being assembled at Boston Whaler with a hardtop.

Some Further Refinements

The rewiring of the [unspecified model year] OUTRAGE 25 Cuddy Sterndrive boat is now complete, and was done to ABYC standards with a new switch panel, dual batteries, and [Blue Sea Systems automatic combiner switch].

All lamps except one lamp on the stern have been refitted with LED lightbulbs.

A GARMIN GPSMap 943 XSV, a 600-Watt SONAR transducer, a RADAR set have been installed.

New console doors in the color Sea Foam are on order.

The boat is now canyon-ready.

Your unidentified model-year OUTRAGE 25 CUDDY "Hardtop" is more like a large T-Top. Typically a hardtop would be supported from its perimeter, while a T-Top would be supported from its center by supports from the center console, which is more like the configuration on your boat.

In Figure 2 the helm console looks like a modified Super Console. The metal framed windshield has been removed. At first glance I could not understand why there was an asymmetrical support tube only on the Starboard side of the console, but after some more study I am guessing that tube is actually not a structural support. It is probably a rigging tube to allow wiring to the overhead console.

If that "hard top" were added by Boston Whaler, I don't think they would have added that rigging tube only on one side, as it just creates a very odd and out-of-balance appearance.

The almost vertical orientation of the steering wheel axis is quite interesting. Having the steering wheel in that orientation is more nautical than the usual horizontal axis orientation seen on modern boats which is more akin to an automobile.

I think the Volvo D4-210 is a turbo-charged diesel engine that was introduced around 2004. On that basis I suspect that the diesel engine was a re-powering of the boat. Perhaps you can comment on that if you are aware of the history behind the engine. The engine also looks to be in like-new condition.

I would concur with all of your comments. The asymmetrical support is a rigging tube. I could add a second support on port side, but that would be too busy for me.

The orientation of the wheel is one of my favorite features of the helm.

The metal framed windshield was much too much busy for me.

The engine was repainted when last removed to access the outdrive trim indicator for replacement.

A decision for adding leaning post side of console with a vinyl snap-on cover and tackle center is to be made.

ASIDE: I put my dog’s E SeaRider bean bag bed underneath so she can stay out of the way, and in the shade.

I am leaning toward a snap on Sea-foam color vinyl cover.

I love my custom teak electronics box. Who says you cant have a little “Carolina” in Rhode Island?

Still to be refurbished are the fuel system component grounding and the VHF Marine Band radiotelephone.

Yes, the boat was re-powerd with the Volvo D4-210 and DPH-A outdrive in 2005. The engine now has about 900-hours running time.

This OUTRAGE 25 CUDDY will go for another generation—or two.

The cuddy is truly a “sleeping cuddy”. Head room is in short supply, but the berths are HUGE for a boat like this, and they are more than seven feet lonng.

Q1: how is the live well of the 1984 OUTRAGE sterndrive configured?

Q2: where was the live well pump water intake?

Currently there are two plastic through hulls (above the waterline). I could add a rough two-foot rigid plastic suction line, use a self-priming diaphragm pump and install a washdown system.

Alternatively, I would bet that the floor of the engine well is solid glass, and I could install a through-hull in the engine well.

What is this color you call "Sea Foam"?

“Seafoam” is a Starboard color. Off white/beige/light tan to go with the gelcoat color.

Does “Starboard” refer to KING StarBoard (a registered trade mark) for a marine-grade high-density polyethylene sheet material?

Usually “Starboard” refers to an athwartship direction, the right side of the ship when looking forward, and the associated color is green.

I think what you are trying to say is in the plastic sheet material you want to use that is made by KING Plastics and sold under the trade name as KING StarBoard, their color designation for the plastic material that gives the best match to the Boston Whaler gel coat color DESSERT TAN will be called SEA FOAM, an off-white or tan color.

ASIDE: I hope you are correct about the KING StarBoard color "Seafoam" being an off-white that will be a match to Dessert Tan. I am concerned because the color name "Seafoam" is more commony used as a name for a light blue-green hue that is a mix of green, blue, and gray.

Cf. https://www.canva.com/colors/color-mean ... oam-green/

If you order "Seafoam" KING StarBoard and you get a box of green-blue plastic, you will know why.

All correct. You scared me with “seafoam”. I agree. Ive seen it used for blue/green before.
Boat outfitters is the door manufacturer. I had to go to the site to double check so i can sleep tonight. Does everyone agree this is a shade of beige/tan? As shown on their site?

Do you mean as shown under the COLOR OPTIONS expanded section on the web page at the URL below:

https://www.boatoutfitters.com/cut-to-s ... -starboard

If you want to direct readers to see something you need to give readers a uniform resource locator address.

As for color match, I would NEVER go by how something looks as rendered from a webpage by your browser on your operating system on your random monitor with a totally random adjustment of the myriad of display adjustments and by your untrained eye.

Before ordering something expensive, have a sample of the material sent to you.

Ask for Arctic White, Seafoam, and Glacier Gray samples.

Wash the gel coat area, removing all dirt and mildew. Polish the gel coat to a nice sheen. Then make color comparisons using midday sunlight with minimal clouds, but not in glaring direct sunlight. Then ask a couple of other people who have excellent color perception to judge the colors, people like professional painters, or women in fashion, or a gel coat repair artisan.

If there is not an EXACT match, a better choice than an almost-match is a distinctly different color in a coordinated hue. The elements of color are hue, luminosity, and surface finish. The coordinating color could be the same hue with less luminosity or maybe a matte finish instead of a glossy finish.
