2016 170 MONTAUK
I just finished the 10-hour break-in period on my new 2016 170 Montauk with Mercury 90 FOURSTROKE BASED ON 2.1-LITER. It is a phenomenal package. I'm quite used to older Montauk boats and their two-stroke-cycle engines. The new and re-designed 170 hull and Mercury FOURSTROKE 90 BASED ON 2.1-LITER are crazy good. Yesterday on glassy water my GPS registered 43.1-MPH. At all slower cruising speeds, the boat holds a plane easily and is very fuel-efficient. I could go on and on about how much I love this boat, but I'm sure most of you know what I'm talking about.

How does the 2016 hull differ from the 2002 170 MONTAUK hull design from 14-years ago? I am not aware of any big changes in the 170 MONTAUK hull, other than quite a cost increase from the $17,655 introductory price.
If the hull is a "new re-designed" version of the 170 MONTAUK, I would like to get some details to add to the REFERENCE section article on that hull.

By the redesign, I meant when Whaler changed the hull back in 02? I thought they might have changed it again since then, but I don't know. I grew up around the old, hard riding, narrower Montauks, so my new hull feels like a Cadillac.

There has been significant changes to the montauk 17 (1980's - 2001) as compared to your 2016 Montauk 170. Whaler has done a nice job improving every aspect of the Montauk. All while maintaining the allure that brings old whaler users back. This product in any form endures. The 2016 version seems to have more interior volume, the console height and layout is ideal for almost any operator, the wiring and cables are very clean, four stroke power and the ride appears to have improved in most conditions.
As Jimh mentions, the price of new 170's has increased quite a bit from its introduction. I suspect yours ran into the low to mid 30k's when all was said and done. With that kind of inflation, the way to enjoy her best is to keep her until she herself becomes a classic.
